Still haven't ridden outside this year... But I did run 2.5 miles yesterday afternoon while chasing my 3 year old on his Islabike, as he rode around the lanes hereabout.

Similar boat, haven't been outside in forever! Along those lines have you (or anyone else) tried any child seats for bikes?

Most of the ones I see are connected to panniers or the trailer things but I'd be terrified of looking around and nothing being there 😭

You can get front ones but they look a bit more deathtrappy?

I have never used a front seat, they look dangerous to me too.

I have a three year old and a seven month old - they both love riding in a rear seat like this (we bought both seats second hand for about £20 each):

They secure to the seat tube with four bolts, so very secure. I've never heard of one coming off. If anything gets loose, it would just slide down the tube and start rubbing on the wheel before anything dangerous happened.

@mjd1988 .... I used a similar carrier for both my girls, the seat I used was attached to the frame.
As you said the first couple of rides was scary but you do become accustomed to it.

One funny story was my daughters ability to kick off her shoes on the bottom of the seat whilst cycling along, which I discovered once on returning home and finding she was only wearing one shoe !!! A very quick retracing of our route found the shoe lying on the edge of the track :okay:
P. S. They were new shoes and Mrs S. would have killed me !

EDIT : The seat that @BurningLegs has just posted above is the one I used...

That was my initial thought but my bike would cost £5000 to replace new for old and our household insurance won't cover it.

Pedal cover. As far as I know they’re the only people who will insure high end bikes as part of your house insurance.
Sounds very much like the bike cover provided by Royal Bank Of Scotland ... Insure the most expensive bike and all other bikes are covered.

Not sure what bike you have in mind for the carrier @mjd1988 , but would recommend something with a bit of weight to it.

When we got our first seat my Mrs had a lightweight hybrid with carbon fork. With the extra weight off the back it made the bike tricky to handle. She now has a Dutch bike which is great. I have a steel hybrid with front rack which is also good, but I find it tricky to mount.

Its quite a challenge to step over the high bar without leaning the bike or swinging your leg round!

Yep, we've got a Hamax Siesta, but it's been taken off now because (a) this has become my Zwifting bike, and (b) Daniel is four next week and is getting too big and heavy for long rides.

My sister-in-law's just had a baby so I think she'll get first refusal on the seat. They're easy enough to come by second-hand.

I'll second what @BurningLegs says about weight - particularly when they're bigger and the seat goes backwards, the centre of mass can be behind the back wheel, and you have to keep the handlebars pushed down to stop it all going wrong. Find some flattish routes because hills are difficult! And pray that you don't get a p*nct*re.

I've got a pinnacle lithium hybrid that weighs more than my car so that shouldn't be an issue:laugh:

I've recently got a rear one - was in the same boat wanting the front one but I think it's a good compromise and he's kept out of the way of the wind.

I've got mine on my MTB and my top tip is to get a bit of elastic or similar on the grips. When you stop, you can use it to keep the front brake depressed, which really helps stability when leaning against the wall at nursery!
