Thanks everyone for the kind words. I was going to cycle today but decided to be sensible and stay off the bike as I'd have probably done something stupid in my angry state and hurt myself. Instead I've spent the day looking at all the kind messages from Rachel's friends - and she has a lot of friends.

At her prime Rach was a demon in the boardroom at work, a hard ball business woman, but also a one woman party. She was petite, played pool down the city bars with the men, sank real ale but tottered around in stupidly high heels.

We got together on New Years eve 1995 in Amsterdam. A group of us went over there. We had been friends for a few months and had quite a lot in common but I thought she was out of my league. New Years eve night we're having a few too many beers, and a few too many wacky backy .... she said it was the most impulsive thing she'd ever done but she walked up to me and kissed me. Best night in Amsterdam ever!!

Here's a pic of her early in our relationship ... I can only assume she was still stoned to think I was a suitable partner. I also thought I've been stoned ever since to have found such a beautiful and amazing woman.

Word of warning - I may be drinking more tonight and posting more shyte. Feel free to skip my posts, I won't be offended (actually I won't know)

Saddest of sad days, Rach passed away this morning, on her birthday. Only consolation I have at the moment is she's no longer suffering and in pain. I've lost my best friend of 25 years. If anyone is having a drink today, please do me the honor of raising a glass to my beautiful wife.

I was lucky to have known her, and I was most definitely batting well out of my league.

So sorry for your loss Carl, I’ll have a glass of bourbon later in honour of Rach.

@Whorty, while I don't drink myself, I will certainly raise a glass of something to you and in memory of Rach tonight. And don't stop telling those stories - no-one ever truly leaves us until the day comes when we stop speaking about them, so please keep them coming. We're here for you and we want to hear them too.

Very well said Steve

In our City days I worked at Lloyd's of london and Rach worked around the corner on Hounsditch. Needless to say we got to know all the pubs in the area well, and the bar staff knew us far too well! In those days a few pubs had pool tables and we'd spend a lot of the evenings knocking down the balls. If there was a group of us we'd most likely be in the Old Tea Warehouse, but if just the 2 of us we would maybe play an away game.

One evening we headed to the Pumphouse on Fenchurch St (now gone). This was a downstairs pub so Rach tottered down in her heals. There were 3 chaps on the pool table so I dropped a quid on the table and got us a beer. When it was my turn I suggested doubles (always more fun). One of the guys looked at me, looked at Rach, then back to me and said .. "against who". I said me and Rach and he snorted (really, he genuinely snorted), and said OK. He racked up, laughing to his mates who also found it funny.

I let them break, as the winner stays on team has the privilege. Nothing down, so I asked Rach if she wanted the table. She did. She walked up. Chalked the cue. Sank 3 balls in quick succession, then snookered their next player (I know, it's what she was like on the table!!). Their faces were a picture  Anyway, long story slightly shorter, we played them all night and beat them 9-1.

I'm guessing that was the last time they underestimated a city girl around a pool table ^_^
