Looking for a reliable HRM, don't mind Chest Strap but also considering armband ... to connect to Garmin Head units so ant+ only IIRC.

Any recommendations? Garmin and Wahoo are expensive ... plus I've destroyed two Garmin HRM's... through sweat :eek:
I've had a Wahoo Tickr for a few years now and have been through a couple of straps but the actual unit has been pretty durable? When my strap failed two years after I purchased the Tickr I sent Wahoo an email and they sent me a new strap in the post for free. Maybe see if Garmin will sort you out through their support channel?

A lot of the cheap ones appear to be bluetooth only, and although they're £20 - £30 instead of about £60 for the Tickr I'd still recommend biting the bullet and going for the Tickr. It just works, and the newest one should be the most durable ever considering it is IP7 rated (can be submerged upto 1meter for 30 minutes). The fact it is waterproof gives you the option to rinse it under a tap or take it into the shower after a workout if needed.

My cheap armband HRM stopped working for 24 hours and is now working flawlessly again.

I'm generally been disappointed by HRMs through the years/decades. I've probably been happiest with the wahoo unit, though I have had to replace the strap as the contacts in the strap stuck to the actual HRM unit. I'm currently using the 4iiii, but it seems to eat batteries at a rate that is simply unacceptable -- I'm guessing it's still transmitting to the connected ATV unit even though I've taken the damn thing off.

Aleman I’m using this one at the moment:

I know you’re looking for a cheaper one. But it’s the best one I’ve used so I thought I’d mention it. The Garmin was the worst I’ve used. The wahoo one I found pairing it hit and miss and I’ve decided I like the arm strap versions better. The one TB mentioned I have too. I like it but the battery isn’t great and it’s a bit more bulky than the polar one. It did come back to life after going through the washing machine to be fair so it’s past that test.

Yeah I've broken a wahoo and a couple of Garmin chest straps.

I've got a fenix 5 watch which works fine so not using a chest strap at the minute. Takes a few minutes to pick up higher HR on the bike (probably needs a bit of sweat on it) but after that it does the job fine.

Is ANT more reliable?

Just did a tough training session, made much harder by the trainer pretty much locking up after the sprint efforts. Had to stop and wait for the ERG to reset a couple of times.

Both the Ant+ and BLE standard have their issues. I've not had many problems with them indoors or outside. However every now and then they have both thrown a fit and not worked correctly.

Persistent issues could be interference from Wifi or microwave oven or even the other standard. But they normally clear quickly. Sometimes the dongle intermittently fails and can take some time to correctly diagnose.

If anything I've found bluetooth more responsive and reliable than Ant+ since changing to it because of Apple TV for Zwift (which is also great)

Just had a FB memory from last year, my last CX race before lockdown, great local course at Fishponds, it was freezing and the stream you had to cross was unrideable by mere mortals so your feet got a good drenching on every lap.
One of the riders was Evie Richards ex U23 CX World Champion, obviously she won the ladies category.

Changed my Companion app picture to remind me of the event & my cold feet... 😉

Nice. Whereabouts is that? (I used to live in Downend).

I'm thinking about getting a Genesis flyer on C2W (my employer are moving offices in Feb and will be a 6-7mile commute). Anyone got the flyer, CdA or anything else based on the frameset and care to share an opinion?

It would be my first single speed bike - has anyone here regretted going SS? Is it a faff to get the chain tension right after re-fitting the rear wheel, or just a case of pull the wheel in as hard as possible and tighten? There is an option to buy with hub gears for an extra couple hundred quid but the commute is flat, and a lot of people seem to love the simple joy of single speed.
