Got an IRW Hill Climb coming up soon. It is short, 700m - averages 10%, and should be good for vomit inducing effort xx(

Have started doing a few max efforts up the climb in preparation. Anyone have experience of organised Hill Climb competitions?

Yeah..... 3 minutes of hell, although the winner only took 2 minutes !

Our local one ( Hinton Hill ) usually attracts a good crowd of supporters cheering the competitors... 👍

Will be interesting to see how you get on, especially compared to my efforts in a C race on a London course last week. Although it's a flat course overall, there are some undulations in the lead-in that can cause problems. You're a better climber than me, so you should be able to hold on to the group at the first hillock (I couldn't!) but at the same time, ZP says there are already two B's in the C pack, so they will clearly be driving the pace which may be the make or break of the ride.

More sandbaggers! Argh!! Yeah, don't need B's pushing the pace.

Not my preferred discipline. Our club has one or two a year.

Do you have an approximate time to climb the course? 2 mins or so.

Lots of short maximal efforts, again, again and again:heat:

My club and neighbouring Club host a few hill climbs towards the end of the season. They typically range from 2.5 miles down to a climb which sounds similar to yours which is just 500m averaging 10% for most of it

Is anyone racing tonight? There’s a crit on at 8pm which suits time wise. I’m tempted to jump into the A race which has higher ranked riders but most have lower 15s power than me so I stand a chance if I can hang in.

I did one last year, my first ever. It was organised by a guy at work so was slightly pressured into it.

It wasn’t fun, and I was slow, although not last as I beat my lad by 1 second.

This is the Segment https://www.strava.com/segments/2420656

It was well organised, I didn’t get overtaken so that was a win. I got a pb for the climb, but I needed much more of a warm up than I did. I was on my normal road bike, but there were all sorts there, many were modified to be as light as possible, no bottle cage bolts, no bar tape, cut down handlebars, single chain rings, no saddle foam, you get the picture.

Anyone got any ideas about the next series we are going to try?
BRT have a new crit Summer series just launched on Thursday evenings And The Herd has a Saturday morning points series also just started - both are now onto round 2. I prefer keeping my weekends for outdoor rides but recent weather has been pants so I’ve taken the indoor option.

I was chatting to Richie who organises the Team IRL events and looks like we will put on some one off races in Sept and then go for a new series in October.

This is the closest I’ve come to a timed hill climb. It’s one of the climbs on the uk 100 but it’s very short really. They use it for a hill climb competition but I always seem to miss it. It’s just over a minute and my best power is around 480w. I think I can get over 500w if I went for it but I’m only ever going up there to do hill repeats so I don’t know for sure. I find the thing that holds me back in the end is the lungs more than the legs when I’m really pushing hard. The time gap between me and the guys who are quick is quite daunting!

My outside minute power is higher than my zwift one by quite a bit. I’m not sure what that means... whether I’m quicker going uphill in real life or maybe it’s just neo power vs power meter power.

This is our local hill climb - 1.17km @ 9% : https://www.strava.com/activities/3284794823/segments/2699009322150502741

My PB is 5:40 which is 2 minutes off getting into the top 10

it's used by the bike club that runs out of the LBS that I bought my bike : https://www.gdw.org.uk/hill-climbs/

Looks like this year thought the Mere climb is off and they've moved to another climb, Stoke wake Hill, which back in 2018 I had to bail and do teh walk of shame as the 20% sections kicked me good and proper (before I lost weight and was a less strong rider!). Reckon I could do this now, if I only could find it again haha

Anyone fancy making predictions?

Pro cycling having a bit of a changing of the guard moment right now.
Can’t see any surprises this year. If fit after his crash at the Dauphiné then Roglic looks best bet. Otherwise it’s Bernal or Pinot (if he can finally keep it together for 3 weeks). Pogachar and Dumoulin could make the podium but can’t see either winning the thing this year.

Roglic

On super form. Grand tour winner already

I’m really rooting for Dumoulin. I’d be amazed if he challenges after the year he’s had. I’m kind of assuming he ends up playing support for Roglic once the dust has settled. But I’d like to see him have a good tour.
