Would be interesting to see that in Strava flybys to see how the splits were changing. I thought we weren’t going to make the catch but then with 7k to Go I thought we were making big gains as the fatigue kicked in. But in the end I think we got hit with the fatigue badly ourselves and any real order to the rotations was lost. Strange how it shows my segment time 10+ seconds quicker. Must have been my false start
I thought I saw an extra body on the D team:laugh: when we started.
Is that a DQ

We didn't do formal rotations, it was literally, whoever feels like pulling next feel free to give it a go  Thankfully I had some great team mates who kept volunteering :notworthy:

I think it’s fair to say the handicaps need some tweaking 😄.

But it’s all part of the fun really. I remember when @gbrown was in charge of setting times. He’s a bit of a computer whizz, and he created an algorithm that took previous results, distance and total gradient into account when setting times. And it was still somewhat hit and miss to say the least!

Times for each team - first 3 riders across the line for the Zwift Insider Strava segment

A team
Al42.16
Lee42.32
Paul42.33
Tommy42.33

B team
Andy43.55
Martin44.06
Bob44.10

C team
Brendan46.58
Carl46.59
Michael46.59

D team
Marino49.58
Tim50.00
Tony50.00

So, 3rd fastest time for each team

A 42.33
B 44.10
C 46.59
D 50.00

Gaps as follows:

D to C = 3.01 minutes
C to B = 2.49 minutes
B to A = 1.37 minutes

Rounding to the nearest 10 seconds:

D to C = 3 minutes
C to B = 2 minutes 50 seconds
B to A = 1 minute 40 seconds

So, if we change the handicaps to the following, we should all be approaching the line together:

D leave at 0 minutes
C leave at + 3 minutes
B leave at + 5 minutes 50 seconds
A leave at + 7 minutes 30 seconds

my tactic of late on the short ramp style climbs, which has worked well, is to sit mid bunch and then on the approach i put down the power, using the draft of the group on the flat section to accelerate and sling shot me into the hill. I keep the power down for the 20 or 30 seconds of the climb e,g, on the likes of the volcano circuit it will get me some seconds advantage on the group by the top, or on the likes of London or Innsbruckring it keeps me near the front by the end of the ramp.
Yes, I'm doing essentially the same thing for the cobblestones in crit city unless I'm trying to break up the group or make someone work harder.

Had to dash off to the supermarket to buy food for relatives and neighbours straight after the race so only just catching up. Well done C team for the win but well done everyone really - that was fun wasn't it?!

Looks like the only time gap that needs any significant tweaking is B to A. We should probably try and do the same course again now that we have data for the time gaps - we could potentially have all four teams catching each other in the last couple of kms!

Thanks Del for organising, and thanks for the pre race banter everyone!

I agree with all the above and thanks Del for sorting it all... but could I make one little tiny request? Could we have one pan flat event? I know hills make it interesting but now we have some timings it might just mix it up if we have an all out drag race. And of course I want one cos I'm a fatty and I'm at a disadvantage on the climbs but for once it might be that I can assist my team beyond the first climb.

Anyway, as always, I'll do what the majority wants, but for once think of the fatty :becool::boxing::laugh:

Couldn’t the A’s just try harder?

It would be good to try a some different courses. I wonder if the difficulty rating that Zwift Insider applies to courses could be of any use to help factor handicap times.

I picked out a rider from each of the first three in each group out of interest to see the time gaps tumble, or more ebb away. 🔽

it looks like maybe another 2 km or so and B’s would also have made the catch as they were gaining fast. Well planned Paul - setting the distance just so they would fall short.

Just reading back through the comments it looks like everybody enjoyed last night's race.

For those new to the TTT style of race, you can probably see why a few of us have been banging on about how much fun it is. I thought that adding the Hare and Hands element, with the team handicaps, just added to the experience. And the pre-race banter, tactical discussions, and even some people doing a course recce, just topped it all off! I really enjoy the WTRL TTT, but last night added a new dimension, racing a bunch of guys you know through this forum.

I see that @Joffey would like to see a pan flat 'fatty's TTT'. @BurningLegs maybe didn't share his enthusiasm. I think if we decide to run any more events, then my first thought would be to go with @bridgy's suggestion, run it on the same course and see if we can get an even closer finish. A minor change to the B/C time gap and a larger change to A/B should do that.

But I'd be happy to run another event on a flat course. One of the London courses, such as the Greater London Flat or Greatest London Flat or maybe the Volcano Flat in Watopia would be good. Before @Joffey gets too excited, I should warn him that TTT events on flat routes are a bit tougher than he may think. The WTRL event was on the Volcano Flat this week, and the constant pace with no rest takes more out of you than you expect it to.

So, the only thing left is to see whether we want to do it again and when. Quite a few people who raced last night had raced a few times already this week and it also looks like we've got some good weather on its way, so more people will be heading outside to escape lockdown for a while. What are people's thoughts on this?
