Yes you can set multiple channels up.

I’m looking forward to this whatever the final design is. These handicap races always turn into chaotic fun!
Tag me into the discussion when you need the team channels set up and I will sort it

Anyone used bulk powders before? Just bought a 500g bag of electrolyte powder from them. At 1g per bottle it should last me a while, and about 1p per bottle so much cheaper than the SiS tablets I’ve used before now!
Use them all the time for chia seeds, goji berries, nuts, peanut butter etc.
I use their coconut powder for a carbohydrate drink and actually use their electrolyte tablets to replace my SIS tablets and they are very good.
I wait for the big discount email to arrive and make a big order and they are excellent.

I’m thinking working as a team and going for the individual win might kind of work against each other if you’re trying to get the guy in third across the line in the quickest time. It’ll be interesting to see who’s ready to sit on the front and pull with a mile to go 😄. But it should be a good laugh either way! Discord for added comedy value!

Regarding elecltrolytes I went through a phase of trying different brands before I went full circle and settled back to sis. I’ve found some of the others have given me stomach cramps in the past. But I’ll give this one a go cheers BL.

Thanks for all the feedback. I've just realised that when people were saying groups, they may have had different types of groups in mind!

Anyhow, I think there's a way through this. Obviously the most important thing you'll notice is that I've made the table below bigger, and most importantly I've added some rather attractive colours! :addict:

I've grouped everybody in sets of 6 from the bottom (top group is 7) which almost maps onto our current categories. I checked out PBs on the Figure 8 course. I discarded times if they were clearly out of date, eg Tommy's PB is clearly far slower than he would ride now, and Carl's and Andy's were clearly set when they were fitter/riding faster and I tried to average out the remaining credible times.

I'm expecting the D group to finish the course in around 53 minutes, and I've set each remaining group off at 3 minute intervals, ie at 3, 6 and 9 minute handicaps. If it doesn't look right, then just shout. It's hard to get these things right, but I think it sort of looks in the right area.

So, turning to how we ride and answering questions raised.

1. If we've got 4 groups, then it should work even if a few drop out or a few extra people say yes. We should still have enough in each group.

2. Will weaker riders get dropped? Maybe, but if you're a stronger rider and need to pull back a 3 minute gap on the next group up the road then you're probably a bit of an idiot to blow weaker riders out the back and lose the help they can give you with drafting. My TTT experience is that when I've got blown out the back its when I can no longer contribute and I'm looking to pull over and die anyway.

3. Should we ride solo but start in groups or ride as a group and take the time of the 3rd fastest over the line? I don't mind. I initially thought people were talking about the latter, but I think it would probably work ok either way. For both options, the team has to work together to maximise the chance of pulling back the handicap. It's just a question of whether we want to end with a head to head or working to get the 3rd fastest over the line? I'll leave it up to people to say which they'd prefer to go for. If it's all good and we want to do it again, we can try the other option next time out and see what we prefer.

4. Somebody asked about using Discord. Could be useful for each of the groups and I think we could set up new Discord groups for each of the A, B, C and D groups.

What do you think guys?

I think it may be better to ask @bridgy to set up the Meet Up as I think most people are following him from when we were doing league races earlier this year.

Looks spot on to me. I think you’ve put me in the right group, despite my PB being significantly longer. Not sure when that was set but I don’t think it’s reflective tbh.

Looking forward to this :okay:

WTF am I in the yellow group🤬

Have I done you wrong Del?

Orangey pink salmon or whatever for me please - at best
I'll be honest then.

I didn't know whether to put you at the bottom of the top group or the top of the next group. So, I thought 'he'll let me know'. And you have!

I will, of course, let you fire the B group out of the traps and, in the process, you can make me pay for it!

Interested to see when everybody set their PR's for that course and whether they were in events or not at the time.

My 56:10 time was on a free ride, so I didn't get much draft, plus I'll admit I probably wasn't exactly on the limit; think I was mainly doing the course for the badge. I do also have a 50-ish minute time, but it only matched the "from the start pens" segment, not the "from the start line" one that has been used here, plus it was done in an event that had over 1,000 other people in it, so it was pretty much a conga-line of drafting all the way. The fact that I was about 6 minutes faster yet my average power was just 14 watts higher, kind of goes to show the difference that makes!

Ok.

Another step forward. It looks like everyone who's replied is happy with the teams. Thanks!

So, we've agreed to group starts but is it a solo competition or a team competition. Really, both formats are valid. Solo is a classic Hare and Hounds and team is a Team Time Trial. Both are good fun, but the tactics are different. I sensed a few more votes in favour of a team competition, but we do have votes for both.

I don't know how regularly we'll do this, as a number of us have other race or club commitments. And as the weather improves there will be more of us riding outside, but let's say we do this maybe every couple of weeks, then we have the chance to try out both formats and decide what works best. I think it will be really interesting and good fun to see the different tactics for both formats, and it should lead to some good banter! Especially when the guys you're trying to help out one week in a TTT event become the ones you try to drop when you try to jump and hold on to a faster group.

We could set up the Meet Up for this Friday with the teams as they are and that leaves us until Friday to agree whether this week is TTT or Hare and Hounds. Whatever date we agree for event 2 is the other format.

Lastly, @IrishAl 's suggestion of using the ZHR Friday night Hare and Hounds Event is an interesting one. I think we actually discussed it as an option last time round, but I can't remember why we didn't use it. We could enter our teams into A, B, C and D cats but set our own start times offset from the actual event start. The pro is we get finish times recorded on Zwiftpower which saves us using Strava segments. The con is that we still get our riders entangled with and drafting riders who are just trying to ride the ZHR event.

Views? I feel like we're getting there.

I think it’s easier to predict the times if it’s a team thing because the pace is likely to be more constant and faster. If we’re racing against eachother within in the groups it’s more likely to become lots of mini races more like the chain gang races. Not a big deal either way just something to think about when setting start times up.

I think Alan’s idea was to all join the same (A) cat. But wait enough time for all the categories to have left the pens before we set off.

What route is that @Del C ? Surprised I'm so much faster than others ... maybe i did it on the old Bkool trainer, or was in a Zwift tour with big drafting. Not sure there is any course at the moment that I'm faster than Michael or Brendan :notworthy: Or maybe I need to try harder 👅
