So, here's the current status of the Hare and Hounds responses and Survey Results.

We're up to 17 yeses and 1 maybe. Table below.

Monday and Tuesday are out. 80% No and 72.7% respectively.

Surprisingly, Friday (91.7% Yes) was the most popular option, followed by Wednesday (84.6%) and Thursday (79.2%).

And 19.00 UK time was more popular than 18.00. (69.2% v 15.3% with balance made up of either).

So, I think we can definitely go for teams. I'm thinking 3 per team? So, if everyone can make the agreed date 6 teams of 3, maybe 5 teams if the date doesn't work for some?

I'm assuming we'll group the teams from D through to A/B, with D obviously going off first.

Then we need to pick a course and agree the time gaps between teams. When @bridgy and @IrishAl set up the last one of theses rides, it was individuals rather than teams, on the Greatest London Flat course at 23.57 kms / 14.65 miles.

We could use the same course. It's generally flat with a couple of bumps in Richmond Park. Time gap at the moment for Cyclechat is fastest time 30 minutes and slowest time 43 minutes, although I think 30 - 40 minutes is more realistic now. So, the event would last about 40 minutes with the D team going off first and the A/B team with a 10 minute handicap.

Or we could do a slightly longer route such as Watopia Figure 8, which is also fairly flat but with the original KoM climb in both directions. Distance is 29.8 kms / 18.5 miles. Time gap is 43 to 56 minutes. So this option would take just under the hour.

I think we've used both of these routes in the past. I'd suggest we try the Greatest London Flat course first and if all goes well and we decide to do it again, then use Figure 8 for the next one?

So, shall we go ahead? I can propose teams and handicaps based on current replies and times. For a date maybe Friday 22 May or 15 May with Wednesday 20 May as a back-up (I thought Wednesday 13 May might be too short notice).

I am not sur so can commit to this but I would certainly prefer Watopia 8 for a bit of uphill spice.

Great work, seems like a fun way to finish the week! Team time trial makes sense to me but happy to try whatever the consensus is

Thanks for all the feedback. I've just realised that when people were saying groups, they may have had different types of groups in mind!

Anyhow, I think there's a way through this. Obviously the most important thing you'll notice is that I've made the table below bigger, and most importantly I've added some rather attractive colours! :addict:

I've grouped everybody in sets of 6 from the bottom (top group is 7) which almost maps onto our current categories. I checked out PBs on the Figure 8 course. I discarded times if they were clearly out of date, eg Tommy's PB is clearly far slower than he would ride now, and Carl's and Andy's were clearly set when they were fitter/riding faster and I tried to average out the remaining credible times.

I'm expecting the D group to finish the course in around 53 minutes, and I've set each remaining group off at 3 minute intervals, ie at 3, 6 and 9 minute handicaps. If it doesn't look right, then just shout. It's hard to get these things right, but I think it sort of looks in the right area.

So, turning to how we ride and answering questions raised.

1. If we've got 4 groups, then it should work even if a few drop out or a few extra people say yes. We should still have enough in each group.

2. Will weaker riders get dropped? Maybe, but if you're a stronger rider and need to pull back a 3 minute gap on the next group up the road then you're probably a bit of an idiot to blow weaker riders out the back and lose the help they can give you with drafting. My TTT experience is that when I've got blown out the back its when I can no longer contribute and I'm looking to pull over and die anyway.

3. Should we ride solo but start in groups or ride as a group and take the time of the 3rd fastest over the line? I don't mind. I initially thought people were talking about the latter, but I think it would probably work ok either way. For both options, the team has to work together to maximise the chance of pulling back the handicap. It's just a question of whether we want to end with a head to head or working to get the 3rd fastest over the line? I'll leave it up to people to say which they'd prefer to go for. If it's all good and we want to do it again, we can try the other option next time out and see what we prefer.

4. Somebody asked about using Discord. Could be useful for each of the groups and I think we could set up new Discord groups for each of the A, B, C and D groups.

What do you think guys?

I think it may be better to ask @bridgy to set up the Meet Up as I think most people are following him from when we were doing league races earlier this year.

Anyone used bulk powders before? Just bought a 500g bag of electrolyte powder from them. At 1g per bottle it should last me a while, and about 1p per bottle so much cheaper than the SiS tablets I’ve used before now!

I use them for my protein powder ,very good supplier and prompt delivery

Love it, that seems like a very sensible way to break up the teams to me. Are we doing team colours?

Here you go @<Tommy> and @IrishAl
https://www.bulkpowders.co.uk/electrolyte-powder.html
It has a big “discount” applied at the moment but I’m always a little dubious of that - I wonder how often it’s not offered at a discount?! Maybe IrishAI can comment on that??
thanks Legs. Yes they Nearly always have big discounts but still I usually find the type of product I’m after much cheaper with them than other competitors like https://www.discount-supplements.co.uk/

Great work Del. I think the teams thing will work well. I can see those of us wanting a solo race can still got our fix - it will most likely become quite clear as we get to the final Kms which team is gonna win it, either one team will have stayed away and got clear, or else it could be a collection of teams that have been mopped up and coming to the line as a peloton. I’m assuming that team A can draft team B etc.

It will be an advantage for all teams to send out a sprinter or two or three to make the top places. And as an example if group A doesn’t catch then there will still be some pride to be the first A over the line. And if a rider breaks rank early then there’ll be hell to pay when he returns here.

The electrolyte should last me a very long time but I also got a small bag of the complete hydration which also has some carbs and added bits n bobs like amino acids (I think). Usually I just add 50g of sugar to an electrolyte drink for a carb version but will see how this compares.
I also considered a “recovery” drink but they’re quite expensive and wasn’t sure if I’d see any benefit. I’d have thought quite a few here would probably have tried the recovery drinks - did you feel any benefit??

one thing I’m thinking is how we will spot the winning team if a mixed bunch does come together. Would it be better to piggy back an event and get the results in Zwiftpower? ZHR hare and hounds is using Greater London flat on Friday evening. if we all register for the As then we will just let official ravers go and then we set off at the intervals planned. Ds off at +1 minute

I usually buy their basic whey protein - a 5kg bag for under £60 with free p&p. Lasts me months and keeps very well. Tastes good too mixed with water and some milk. For me as it’s mostly protein I assume it’s good for muscle repair. It’s also got a fair amount of carbs so not the leanest of protein drinks. I usually take one shake a day just before bed to avoid me snacking or taking a supper - snacking at bedtime is down fall of mine when it comes to weight loss. I havent tried a ”recovery” drink before but I assume it’s a similar idea with protein for muscle repair
