Here is my race report:

I joined the racegate with just under 20 minutes to go and @BurningLegs was already there. Over 100 were signed up for the B race but 99 eventually took to the start. ZP has my 1 minute (recent) best as 346W so I planned to beat that by a bit to try and get a slightly safer start. I have a minor beef with Zwift in that it doesn’t start recording the race until you cross the line, which can be up to 20 seconds after starting. As that is often at very high power, it undercalls your average power.

We started and I noticed that all the CC guys were in the mix, having noted they all planned to start a bit faster. That was good to see. However, @peterob didn't show - I hope all is well :okay:

After about 3.5 miles the first split happened at about position 60 – and @Brusgaard was unfortunately at the head of the second group. Then around 4.8 miles in, as we hit the reverse KOM there was another split and I saw @Alongo slipping away and the elastic broke.

I was working hard and set an all time PB up the reverse KOM but still didn’t stay in the front group which had whittled down to about 33 by the top. I was in a group of 13 which I had had to fight hard to cling on to up the climb.

Then not much happened for a while, riding over-under threshold most of the time. At the reverse sprint, I lost concentration and had to work too hard to catch my group up which I could have done without!

Then the pace slackened and we were riding at low tempo for a bit. I think everyone knew the race would be up the KOM. I hit the KOM in 43rd and the hurt began immediately. I was breathing hard, and set my all time PB up this KOM as well, but still ended up at the back of the now shattered group by the top. We regrouped into a bunch of five of us who pretty much went to the line together. As is becoming too usual, I didn’t manage the finish very well and ended at the back of this group. 46 of 99 according to the screen, 44th according to the results table which flashed up and 36th on Zwiftpower. I’m not particularly pleased with the result, but PBs on both KOMs was good and my NP was fairly reasonable. Overall, not too bad considering I had raced two days earlier as well. Back to Zone 2 for a while 😊

League-wise us Bs have slipped to 5th but it is good to see the Cs and Ds both in Silver medal position. On the individual league – I am now 16th and 17 points behind 10th place. That is something to aim for.

Next week it is 2 laps of the London Loop. Onwards and upwards.

About 18 months ago i was racing ( only on Zwift ) and putting in some good consistent progressive intervals and also some decent 3 to 4 hr rides, I did a 20 min FTP test at that time and it was 289 , I was at 74 kg and was probably in the top 20% of the B cat races .

Just after Christmas I cut out alcohol ,bread and lot of excess sugar , I got down to 70 kg , started to get a bit more structured with the time available , some decent intervals , a few races . I haven’t done a FTP test but I reckon I’m about 265/270 ish , which is roughly the same w/kg . With the races I’ve done recently I seem to be finishing around mid field .

We went on a walking break to Lakes in mid March and the the Covid concerns came around which caused me to loose focus . Before this I decided not to race and focus on intervals, to which I felt I was responding to well , however , after the break I thought I would try doing a few races again . I really enjoy the races, although have struggled in a few . For me , I think the intervals benefit me more than the racing as you can be very specific with time /zones etc and the racing is unpredictable in demands , but more “fun “ and interactive than intervals.

To just try to sum myself up , I think I need to decide on one Zwift race plus one decent interval session or two Zwift races a week , both options including a couple of steadier rides , one being over two hours .

I totally agree with this. Intervals are very precise and focussed, and races are the opposite. Chaos and unpredictable. But there is some cross over between the two in terms of pay off. And I don’t think anything g prepares you for racing like racing does to be honest.

Havjng said that I’m in the exact same boat. Another two races a week or one race and one interval session is all the high intensity I can cope with physically.

I could have written almost the same post

Last minute family duties took precedence yesterday evening unfortunately. I was looking forward to the race too as I have hardly been on the bike over the last week, other than a couple of lockdown pootles with the wife.

Sounds like everyone enjoyed a good race though :okay:. I've updated the CC league table - let me know if I've missed anyone/anything.

@<Tommy> what race are you planning on later? I may join you if the time suits.

About time too ... they've only released this on a few races so far ... and already the sandbaggers caught by it are complaining

Oh dear .... twice up Box Hill next week ... that'll almost certainly see me promoted to B after (or during) that race

I don’t disagree with FTP tests , but I hate ramp tests . Did anyone see the Trainerroad live ramp test on youtube , chapeau to Nate , he buried himself .

I like to keep the intervals simple and think that Steven Seilers 4 , 8 , and 16 minute intervals are very effective . Riding these at around 88 , 90 , 92 % of max heart rate gets you very good quality high intensity but also doesn’t destroy you .
I find Zwift great for this as you can jump on the Alpe or maybe Tempus Fugit for a steady predictable profile . You can write these sessions in the workout section very easily too .

I need to lose some weight too - it's really slowing me down. My power numbers are alright (new FTP of 254 last night) but I'm 106kg so it pulls my w/kg down. Must stop eating pies and drinking beer!!!

Due to Marino's DQ (which is totally undeserved btw, he rode a really good race last night) I got 3rd in Cat D last night. Unfortunately despite having 3 riders I was the only one to score points  It seems a hollow bronze medal though as Marino should have had that place. Hopefully the three of us can all go again next week and get some points as I think we can push the 3 DBR lads for top of the league.

BTW, I really enjoyed that course. I thought it might be too hilly for me but I managed to get over the climbs alright and not lose too many places. I don't seem to be too bad at the rolling courses. It's just the big climbs that do me in.

Well done everyone is all the other Cats - looks like we had a decent night :okay:
Joffey if I can’t get my cat c status back to cat D on the next ride then I’ll ride with you and help you out as it’s pointless literally to race in cat c
