I went for yet another blood test today, and as usual, that involved me doing 4 miles of brisk walking to and from the clinic. TBH - I hadn't looked at the local forecast, so I expected the dreary weather I set off in at 08:30 to last all day. To my surprise and delight, the sun came out for my walk home so I decided to make the most of the pleasant conditions and get a ride in while they lasted.
A quick change of clothes, a last minute bike lube, and I was set to go.
I wanted to treat myself to an easy start for a change, rather than having to slog my way up the usual 4 or 5 mile climb very early on. I don't like the traffic on the A646 valley road, but once in a while it isn't so bad as long as that isn't during school runs or commutes.
I'd noticed that a significant NW wind was blowing. I would be sheltered from the worst of that down in the valley as I headed out towards Burnley, and then I would pick up a good tailwind as I climbed up the Long Causeway back towards Hebden Bridge.
It was a pretty uneventful ride along the valley. The most significant thing I noticed (apart from the sunshine and the traffic) were the big railway engineering works under way on the
Holme Tunnel between Hebden Bridge and Burnley.
A couple of miles further on, I turned right and climbed to Overtown, then took my preferred shortcut to the Long Causeway up the steep and scenic Greencliffe Lane.
For those of you who are fans of
Grand Designs ... someone has created their own about 3/4 of the way up the Lane. It is a large modern bungalow with commanding views over nearby fields to distant hills. It has a huge glazed corner allowing in light from the east, south and west to make maximum use of whatever sun that part of Lancashire happens to be getting. It also has a south-facing terrace where the
lucky b******s owners can sit and enjoy their views. Jealous, who,
me?
It was still under construction when the Google Streetview car went up there back in 2009, but you can get a feel for the building and its location -
here.
As I'd hoped, I got a good tailwind on the long drag up to the
Coal Clough windfarm.
I had intended to head straight down to Blackshaw Head from the high point of my ride, but it seemed a shame to rush home when the black clouds to the NW still looked about an hour away. And so I did a little detour - right down Eastwood Road ...
... to Great Rock, and then I climbed back up to the village.
After that, home via Jack Bridge, Colden, Slack, and Lee Wood Road. 23 miles in total.
I washed my bike, took it into the house and the clouds arrived about 5 minutes later and rain started. Jammy, eh?
