I wanted to start increasing my mileage today and therefore headed out on a Bank Holiday ride, that didn't quite turn out as expected, for reasons that will become apparent!
I started out from home in lovely warm :sun:and headed out to meet @Rickshaw Phil and his brother at his house. About a 5 & 1/2 mile trip from my place and arrived after about 1/2 an hour, to the usual warm welcome .

We then set out from their's and headed out towards Condover. We had been going for about 2 miles, when Phil pulled off into a layby in front of me with a completely flat back tyre!! He removed the wheel, etc and the Inner Tube had actually split and so there were around 5 or so holes in it!

(Phil replacing Tyre, smiling still at this stage)

Luckily (or so we thought) Phil had a spare inner tube in his panniers (which had already been used and patched) but it was roadworthy and so he replaced everything, pumped the tyre up, replaced the wheel, was about to set off again and there was a pop and hiss and the tyre completely deflated again!! Phil then went back through the rigmarole of removing wheel, etc and we found a hole in the middle of the previous patch repair he had done. So, he replaced this repair with a new one, checked no thorns, etc, were in the tyre and put wheel back on, pumped it up and...................guess what, a pop and a hiss and the wheel deflated again :cursing: . By now Phil was not smiling and being only 2 miles from home, thought the best thing to do was to return home, walking with the bike and let me and Doug carry on with the route. (There is an addition to the puncture story, but I will let @Rickshaw Phil expand on this later).

So, Doug and I continued our journey, into Condover, out to Ryton, Longnor, Frodesley, Acton Burnell, Acton Piggott and onto Cound Moor, where we stopped for lunch. An annoying close pass by a pillock in a red roller skate of some sort was the only downside to this bit.

(Doug in mid munch )

We pressed on and headed down to Cressage and then over to Eyton on Severn (with second close pass from idiot in an MG) and to Wroxeter Roman Village. We had a message from Phil at this stage, to say that he had made it back home and was heading out on his other bike, on the reverse of the route we were on, to meet us somewhere along the way.

We then pressed on to Upton Forge, through what felt like someone's back garden  and up to Upton Magna, where we thinking of stopping at a pub for a pint. The pub seems to be shut permanently though and so we continued towards Uffington, where we met Phil coming in the opposite direction . A quick stop to chat and a decision was made to carry on to Uffington and call in at the Corbet Arms for a pint.

We had an enjoyable pint, only annoyance being the plethora of blasted Wasps that wanted to attack us and steal our beer . However it finished humans = 1, Wasps = 0, as I managed to swipe one with my hand into Phil's seat, with enough force that it was agonner :bravo: (aplogies to wasp lovers......if there are any!!)

We then proceeded along the old canal path back towards my house, except for Doug who had found his second wind by now and proceeded to hurtle past the turning we needed! We shouted him, but there was no sign and so Phil headed off to catch him, but ended up having to phone him due to his speed!

He returned, rather  and we did end up back at my house.

The legs felt great and the stats were 32.71 miles, avg speed 11.1 mph.

A glorious morning for a ride through the lanes today, I did a 28 mile loop round the lanes to Tatton Park where I found a quiet spot for a breather and took a piccie of my vintage Giant in the sunshine.

Spent a few minutes watching the Tatton lawn mowers at work before heading back through Knutsford and the back lanes.

A lovely way to spend the morning, who says it always rains on Bank Holidays?

I normally stick to roads but decided to take the cyclocross (commuter cross really) for a spin. Headed out to Greenham Common with the boy to do a bit of riding on gravel tracks and some slightly more adventurous off road (muddy bits and steep down and uphills). Had a great clip less moment when the bike went over on a steep up hill bit into brambles and nettles, not a soul around so I could patiently remove the thorns from my leg and back.

Pushed it up the hill and headed back for the gravel tracks only to get a puncture, whilst fixing it several dogs came over to say hello and dropped their ball at my feet to throw. Then the valve broke in the pump but the air in it stayed in to so off I trundled back to the car.

Not quite how I planned the ride, but great fun.

Lovely ride around today, a route I've done before.. Cogenhoe, Whiston, Grendon Lakes, Castle Ashby, and onwards to Yardley Hastings.

Yardley Hastings.jpg

A lovely stretch down to Olney and up some hills to Weston Underwood, Ravenstone & Stoke Goldington.

I hadn't noticed it before, but the oldest tree in Hanslope Parish is right beside the road.. Just before a Cat 4 climb.

Instead of the regular stop at Salcey Forest, I called into a friends place (he works stupid shifts so isn't often there.. or is asleep!) and cadged an ice cold can of Coke.

My route home was via Preston Deanery and Great Houghton the home. A few hundred yards over 50 miles. including 16 Strava PB's and a 4th spot on Castle Ashby Loupe. Quite happy with that!!

Back to work tomorrow now my holidays are over

Little short 5.03 mile ride tonight averaging 11.9mph so out for a few seconds over 25 minutes. It took us a bit to get out tonight as Hubby changed his Boardman saddle (not suited to his bum) for a Spesh BG Riva (mens) to see how that goes. I love the ladies version, I've been using one for a couple of months now. Way better than the Selle Italia Prolink that I keep meaning to put on ebay.

We rode on the back road behind our house then out on to Silfield Road, turned left up Long Lane and pootled along there, remembering the 90 degree left hander with the sand in the middle of it We then turned right on to Silfield Street and then back over the cycle/foot bridge that spans the A11 and down Rightup Lane. We dashed over the white spot of paint masquerading as a roundabout, up Silfield Road (the hill there) and home via the back road behind our house.

Nice wee ride, my shoulder is killing me after yesterday for some reason. Wonder if I have not got used to the new bars yet. They are only 2cm narrower than the original bars so I wouldn't have thought that the bars would have caused the pain. Maybe I slept funny the night before and the ride exacerbated it. I'm running out of heat cream and MSM gel though.

Should add at about 100km after the tortuous accent of the unexpected short cat 4 climb I was caught by three roadies.
Fortunately for them they were going a different way otherwise I would have spanked their arses, NOT.
On review the rear video of my ride up the climb I see the three roadies did not actually catch me up the climb, in fact it looked like I may have pulled away on the climb a little.
They actually caught me on the flat part after the climb when I eased off too much.
And the different way they took was a dead end, so maybe the wrong turn was a ploy to avoid me:tongue:

A lovely 24 miles albeit with a mildly strong headbreeze...but I seemed to have good legs this evening, its been a while since I felt like that.
So many times ive read posts re gps etc and thought..just ride, but tonight i could have done with one, I meandered my way through..Ferry Meadows, to Marholm, past Werrington and onto Glinton, past Ninebridges to Northborough, over to Maxey then Helpston..then meandered about till I saw a sign for Ailsworth then back through Ferry Meadows and home.
Much of the time I was reasonably unaware of my exact position, I dont normally get out that side of the city.
Suns falling as I got home and the temperature fell just as quick.
Looking back, I probably rode 20 of those miles and scarecely saw a car, real countryside stuff...brilliant.

It was split into 4. I set up my bike with the new trailer for the kids then I went out for a test ride 12km (the trailer was empty). Test ride went well so I went out with the eldest one and 7km all went well, back home for the change of passenger and out again for 5km with the smaller one. After a short break my wife and I packed the two of them into the trailer and we all went out for a 20km spin. Kids loved the ride. I found pulling them to be good fun.

Decided to do the PCC Social Ride today. Eight of us left the Square this morning, heading to Belvoir Castle. It was a bit grey and cold at the start, so much for the forecast. The father and son that been in the group, left near Stamford; the Father to the Son, 'we done a steady 30 this year and we'll do the full thing to Belvoir next year'; we are holding you to your promise ;) The rest of us headed to the Wymondham Windmill Tea Rooms and en route glimpses of blue sky appeared and then sun finally came out :sun: Two left us here and the remaining four headed to our Belvoir Rendezvous and the pub at Woolsthorpe. We were served alcohol quickly, a pity the same can't be said for the food. We were getting sick of the wasps and were about to leave when they finally came to take our order; the food came relatively quickly :hungry: As we were getting near Bourne, (one of the riders lives there) he offered a lift and a couple riders it was wise to take the kind offer of a lift. I politely declined as it looked too good an evening to waste and headed back to Peterborough and went by Oundle Road and Orton Mere to make it a ton.

102 miles with @toptom & another mate, James. Over 3 counties, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, the Chiltern hills, and into Oxfordshire. Lots of banter, lots of sunshine and a nice lunch stop at Waterperry Gardens. A great day on the bike, and the Mrs cooked rib-eye steak & jacket spud for dinner which was much needed. Absolutely knackered now so not much of a write up. Time now to veg out in front of the telly, and I might pour myself a large whisky.
