I had originally intended to do a ride in the afternoon but firstly it was too hot and perhaps more importantly my wife suggested a walk. Walk planned and finished off with cake, my attention turned to the ride. It was going to be an evening ride so I readied the bike by fitting a light and my new Topeak Tribag. I also rang a mate and suggested that we meet up at the George in Great Budworth.

I planned a rather complicated route including my obligatory off-road section and SatMap loaded, off I went. It was very much a slacker's ride, varying between slow and slower. It was however totally brilliant. Quiet lanes, loads of rabbits (and clouds of gnats). I bowled up at the pub after an hour and forty minutes. A table outside was reserved by judicious bike parking and two beers were bought. My mate turned up and we had a nice chat and another beer. About 8:30 I set off back. A bit faster this time in the failing light. I was glad that I had fitted the lights and before long I paused to put them on. Noted that cycling felt faster in the failing light. An easy ride back and home at 10pm.

42mile round trip. Two pints and a packet of nuts. What good fun!

It was a wee bit on the :heat: side yesterday wasn't it? I only had time for a quick ride so headed out on my short route to Acton Burnell at completely the wrong part of the day. I don't always bother taking water with me on this ride but did yesterday and was very glad of it as I needed the whole 750ml.

The saddle was also giving me gyp (I thought I'd found the sweet spot after lowering the bars, but apparently not) so there were a few stops for adjustment too. Will need more rides to see if I've sussed it.

In spite of the heat and stops I managed the 17.4 miles at a moving average of 14.9mph, which is not bad for me.^_^

Drink stop at Longnor.

I chickened out of the ride to mum & dads that I was going to do, before the footy. Far too hot!! I needed a drink even just sitting and watching the football. I'm not complaining about the heat, as it is long overdue, but it was a bit much for cycling in for me!

The alarm clock was set slightly earlier than normal for a Sunday morning. we wanted to try another ride today, but earlier than yesterday to avoid the heat. anything where you have to keep cycling to keep cool is too hot for my liking and the only way to avoid that was to set out earlier.

Pretty much the same route as yesterday (just slightly longer) with a few diversions mostly seeking out shade in a forest - still on the mtb and back into Delamere forest for a meander around the trees. Thankfully an earlier start meant few mobile obstacles to dodge, though one dog had us smiling - it was clearly on strike - it had found a bit of good shade under a tree on the track and was steadfastly refusing to go any further. we were on a way home at this point, and agreeing with it; it was getting too warm. Blackberry alley still needs some more cutting back, shall take my landlady's dog for another walk later tonight with the secateurs again, my legs attest to the need. You always know somethings not right when one leg suddenly gets much cooler and feels wet! just scratches but they bled well! Otherwise, slightly slower, slightly longer and slightly further and just as exhausted as yesterday... Nettle cordial for drinks on the return - at least there is some use to blackberry alley produce (where I get the nettles, honeysuckle, elderflower & blackberries from...) http://app.strava.com/activities/66938126 No photos, Delamere forest is really not that interesting at the moment.

It's a bit more reasonable warmth for cycling out there today  so I headed out for a ride round the Cardington area. A couple more tweeks of the saddle had it feeling comfortable again which was nice .

The route was Condover, Longnor, Cardington, then back past Church Preen School, Langley and Ruckley, Acton Burnell, Pitchford and Condover again.

There were loads of other cyclists out today - most fully lycra'd up which made me wonder if there was an event on but I didn't see any race numbers or route markers so I think they were all just making the most of the :sun:.

I may have pushed a little hard on the way out so my legs were aching a bit towards the end of the ride:blush: , however I did feel chuffed to have got up most of the climb to Folly Bank in a higher gear than I usually do.

There were a couple of scary moments on quick bits of road. The first was coming round a corner at speed to find a car coming at me on my side of the road. The driver had gone wide to overtake a couple of horses - not doing it on a blind corner may have been a good idea. The second was coming round a corner to find a large stick right on the line I was taking. I managed to just miss it - not sure how.

27.95 miles covered at 14.1 mph average which I don't think is bad for a hilly ride.

About to start the descent to Acton Burnell now and looking back towards Causeway Wood and the Long Mynd.

Another early rise (5:00am) today with the intention of getting a ride in before the heat got too unbearable. However the plan was thwarted by a severe bout of farting about syndrome, which didn't see me leaving the house until 11:00 . Anyway I set off heading out along the flatlands of Solway before cutting inland to pass through Wigton and then climbing up towards the Crown Inn, which seems to be one of the highest points around Carlisle. After which it's all downhill back home. That's around 38 miles with most of the climbing in the last 3rd.

Today's 'stop shot' is off Raughton Head church. There's a free SIS water bottle sat on the wall if anyone wants it

And to top off a great ride, I got a puncture about 600yds from home  I hit a stone at around 30mph, which shot sideways at a great rate of knots, giving me a snakebite in doing so. It's the first puncture I've had in as long as I can remember... so I assume this is penance for farting about earlier?

Lol we had arranged two meeting points and I awoke early so I thought I go to the one in town, only one rider turned up; un-beknown to us it had been finalised for the 2nd (I really should have checked fb in the morning ). A quick text and it was sorted out, forgot to turn the Garmin on for the dash to Orton Mere (the 2nd meet). We then rode down to the PCC Sportive. A great value Sportive if you are thinking about it for next year, £12 for two excellently stocked feed stations (energy drink/ tea/ coffee/cakes/ bananas/ flapacks/ Jellybabies/ Soreen, etc) and a goody bag with a bottle and energy bar and armwarmers) and the club still makes a good profit, it makes you wonder about other events! It was thankfully misty for most of the ride and we were close to the end when the sun came out and I decided to up the pace before it got too hot. After a bit of banter in the village hall (start/finish) we then rode back and I got back in time to see the last 1.5km of the TdF and given the finish that was actually quite a bit. With the ride to/from the meet and the missing bit I'm guessing it was around 124miles, of to shower now!

We are just in from a nice ride.
We got the 9.53am train to Norwich and then sat on the platform for 30 minutes waiting for the 10.45am to Great Yarmouth. Once there we jumped on our bikes and headed off towards Caister on the cyclepath that the council has so thoughfully provided. Much better than dodging numpies towing caravans. After Caister we picked up the A149 earlier than we meant too which meant a one mile dash along a duel carriageway as, by the time we realised that we should have left the roundabout at the next junction, it was too late to turn round really and leg it across the road to go back.
Once on the A149 proper, single carriageway road, we made good time and watched the scenery go by. I pointed out the road to How Hill where I went on many a school trip when I was a kid. Hubby suggested that Ludham might be a nice place to stop for a nice ice lolly. He spotted a 'ye olde gifte shop' type sign, followed by a 'Walls' sign so we followed it. The detour was a bit further than we anticipated, so about a mile down the road we found nice Calipo lollies, a gift shop, clothes shop and something else that I have forgotten now.
We spent about 20 minutes there, chatting with a tourist who was horrified that we had ridden 13 whole miles in less than an hour. Surely that is a one way trip to casualty and a heart attack. Tourist was a good 10 years or more younger than us too  Here we are at Ludham. I am on the left, hubby who occasionally posts as Packrat is in the cat-sick green jersey.
LudhamLolly.jpg

Back on the road and we kept on following it all the way into Hoveton (Next to Wroxham - Hoveton is known as Wroxham by the tourist industry) where we crossed over the main road and headed into Coltishall and waved at several cyclists who were slogging up the hill that we were whizzing down. What goes down does go up and we then attacked the small climb that followed it and then along the flat bit to the green by 2 very good pubs. We first tried The Rising Sun as they had seats right on the rivers edge but they had a 90 minute wait for food, even salads. We popped next door to the Kings Head who had food available there and then. Hubby went down the scampi and chips route but I asked if they could knock up a ham & cheese ploughmans, which they were happy to do. They filled up our water bottles for us too, adding ice and lemon wedges for us, which was rather nice.

We spent about an hour having lunch and having a stretch all in all. We nearly took pics but discovered the Hubby's phone had a dead battery so that stuffed us. We decided not to follow the original route of heading towards Norwich and then out the other side but decided to head off up the Buxton Road when we reached Horstead and head for Hainford then Felthorpe and then towards Taverham. Interestingly where the map suggested straight on along the main road, what it really meant was bear left on the not main road. We discovered this when mapping the ride when we got in. This meant we really took the pretty route. We totally missed Taverham and ended up in Ashwellthorpe, about 100 yards from Pastor Graham Dacre who runs the TLC church. Mr Saluki noticed where we were as I didn't have a scooby.
Once we realised where we were we decided to carry on along the Fakenham Road and took the first left which eventually brought us out - after a few hills - at the A47 which took us a good 5 minutes to cross. It was wall to wall traffic with no decent sized gaps. I don't think that the chap in the car behind us was terribly impressed but I am not diving across cars & lorries doing 60mph just so he can get home 2 minutes earlier.

Once across we started heading for Honingham and went up the hill, then up some more and then up even more. I got half way up and had a breather. I had forgotten about that blooming hill. Its not wildly steep but it goes on forever. Its not an Alp so we shouldn't whinge really. Having dragged our sorry backsides up that hill we virtually freewheeled into Barnham Broom, dropped in at the Bell PH and asked if we could be cheeky and have our water bottles topped up. The landlady was happy to fill them and was astonished that we had come "all the way" from Yarmouth. It was only 40 miles to there, its not the fantastic journey for pity's sake.
From there we rode straight along the Barnham Broom Road, over Tuttles lane and through the middle of the town and up the hill to home. I got to the road we generally ride down to ours and rode down it and looked behind and no hubby! I went back the way that I had come and still no hubby. A little worried now. I rode back up the main road to home to see if he'd given up and walked the last 1/4 mile and there was still no sign of him. I headed for the front door and there he was, hanging his bike up. He had just gone up the main road and not the usual route.

46.58 miles in 3 hours 37 mins riding time. We are very pleased with ourselves. Better go out and walk the dogs now. They have their faces on and will be banging their bowls for food in a few minutes.
