Today's ride had a couple of missions incorporated into it. I rode over to Armley to pick up some pies to share with the staff at Woodrup Cycles and GarminDave and Skippy9999, new members of this parish, who'd come down from South Shields to test ride a Woodrup Chimera. I distributed the pies, Wison's for those who are curious and cycled along the canal to Rodley where the Station served some nice ales. Returned to Woodrups left GarminDave and Skippy9999 to discuss measurements and went home. Twenty two miles on a nice sunny day.

Working today, no ride for me, though I could've done when I got home, but I was bit Jacobs'd and couldn't be bottomed.

40mph blow out :hyper:

Planned a tough 50 mile/5,500 ft loop Glossop - Whaley Bridge - Macclesfield - Buxton - Marple - Glossop

All going great and descending off the Cat and Fiddle towards Buxton. It's a reasonably fast descent with a number of blind corners. Took one and there.......in the middle of the road.......a mahoosive bolt that presumably had fallen off a lorry. By the time it had registered in my brain I was on it and I rode straight over the top of it. Bang...pssshhh...immediate deflate. Doing 40, around a bend. I s*** myself
Front wheel started to slide from under me as I lost all grip. I felt the rims running on the asphalt. This is it, I'm coming off at 40mph.
But then somehow I stayed upright, put the anchors on and finally pulled up to a halt about 100m down the hill.

Quick inspection, front tyre is wrecked, big split in the side wall. I'm still about 3 miles from Buxton which has a bike shop where I can buy a tyre and a tube. Do I walk it or do I try a new tube in it and hope for the best. Stuck a new tube in it and gingerly continued down into Buxton. Just as I got to the shop....pssshhh....replacement tube gone.

New tyre, 2 new tubes, £28 worse off and I'm cold and p***** off. Rode home but heart wasn't in it. Could have been worse, I hate to think what it would have been like coming off at 40

You were lucky, that could have been nasty. You can always get more money.

Scary moment! Glad you stayed upright.

Thanks for the comments. Looking back I was really lucky. The bike started to go down (and me with it) but there must have been just enough grip to keep upright.

When stuff like this happens it does make me wonder if it's worth it. Might have to take it easy on the descents until I get my mojo back.

Did some more exploring this afternoon, having decided to find out what the lanes linking two of my regular loops were like and I was pleased to discover that it made for a really good ride and came in at a decent distance - 37 miles. Will definitely be doing that route again.

Set off in bright sunshine but it clouded over within half an hour  and stayed like that until the light started to fade.

Wasn't expecting to see this face leering at me when I checked over my shoulder:

Looking out over Taunton Vale and the Quantock Hills in the background:

Feeling smug as I crossed over the M5. It's half term so not as busy as is usual for the time of day.

Just back from a pleasant 30 miles with my cycle group. T'was extremely misty first thing this morning and the number of cars that didn't have lights on as I rode into town was rather scary. Especially the ones bombing it down the main road. One (well lit up) car that overtook me only narrowly avoided a head on collision when a ninja appeared out of the gloom.
