Up early and an extended commute to work, nice and early, nice and (relatively) cool.
Makes me want to get up as the sun rises, no traffic, cool and quiet.
Wish there was something else to tell, but an uneventful sub 20 miler.

Usual commute but spiced up with the Silk Road now sporting tri-bars!

Released from family duties about 4 pm so jumped on the bike and tried to work out a route that took advantage of the strong SW wind. Shot down very fast with the wind to Whalley, north then west to Stonyhurst College the imposing Jesuit private school, freewheeled the full length of the half mile drive to the college, blown by the wind:

Thence on to Longridge taking advantage of the shelter of high hedges then back in an easterly direction through Roman Ribchester, crossed the river Ribble, which is lower than I've ever seen it and on up the long climb to home. 24 miles.

Again, we went to Thetford forest for the trails there, but it was way too hot, so we had a drink in the cafe mid-flow... in the end, we managed about 10 miles.

Having had no ride yesterday I got up early and decided to try out the Dunfermline Road Club Sunday ride. I maybe should of took the hint when nobody showed up that the wind was too strong but somebody else turned up at the last minute so we did a ride together. He was a good strong rider and even with a strong SSW wind with us mainly going west and a lot of rain, we still averaged 18.4mph; he should take all the credit for that he done 99% (if not more) of the pulling . He was new'ish to the area so for a change I took him up Law Hill and Knock Hill even then the average only dropped to 17.4mph. We came back through town on the dual carriageway and we certainly felt the wind or more particularly the gusts, the met said it was 22mph with 33mph gusts  All in all it was a very enjoyable ride despite the weather 41.2 miles (2566ft), thanks Kev  PS it was a wise decision not deciding to do a loop of Loch Leven

Did a very pleasant 25 miles out to Fowlmere with the wind behind us. This was then followed by a somewhat-less pleasant 25 miles back in to the wind, broken only by a brief stop to find out if getting a train was feasible (it wasn't), another one to consider the merits of ice-cream in Ashwell (passed unanimously) and finally to negotiate acquisition of bacon sarnies, cold drinks and caffeinated beverages at the cafe in Baldock.

12 mile hilly time trial in the lashing rain on fixed gear....... came within 3 seconds of beating the club champion.......... B) also on fixed.

Route; Welland-British Camp-Eastnor-Holly Bush- Castlemorton Common.

gear used ; about 65 inch much higher and I would have stalled it on the Little Malvern climb, possibly might have got away with 68 or 70 but I am too heavy for high gears on this course.

I had a day off work today and it really makes a difference, might start working Saturdays and have Thursday [ club tt night ] off from now on.

I hadn't been up Blagdon Hill (beloved of Exmouth Exodus riders) since February, so decided it just needed doing.

After rain and wind for most of the day this evening was perfect cyclig weather. Warm, dry, a bit too much wind but not serious, Set off, past the racecourse, out through Corfe, across to Blagdon, left turn and upwards. Hard work, but got to the layby after the sharp bend before needing to rest. After the stop didn't need another one until back home, but who needs to rest going down Corfe Hill anyway?

It's always beautiful looking from the Blackdowns across Taunton to the Quantocks and this evening with good visibility and an interesting sky was particularly pleasing - made all the better by having got up there by my own efforts.

That's the best climb up there since I was ill 2 years ago, When I can do it without a R&R stop I'll know I'm as recovered as I'll ever be!

Rode into the city to drive my sister home who had stayed on for end of week drinks... 18.5km in 28:11 - that's close to 40km/h average!! Obviously had a huge tailwind pushing me along and I'm glad I didn't have to go the other way as cyclists I passed looked to be struggling.

A lovely (if windy) ride along the Coast from Egremont to Cumbria, 76 miles all in although there was more tail wind than head wind. Happy to say that despite the weather forecast there were only a couple of showers.

I had a slow cycle over the FRB (21miles) and did the Club run (43miles); unfortunately p'tured, my mate dropped back to help me which was nice as it was windy and instead of the cafe we went to his place and watched the TdF. A couple of hours later I cycled the 20mile home, again at a slow pace as it was all into the wind.

Got up early this morning - clear skies but quite a bit of wind. Did a 45 mile loop around sussex. started with a nice tail wind to get the legs warmed up and then had about 15 miles of rolling road with cross winds.........then hit Bury Hill (not too nasty but interesting with a head wind). Then had a lovely descent into Arundel, clear roads and really fast before ending with an 8 mile flat road with bucket loads of tail wind....happy days......home for bacon sandwiches and coffee.........

some other highlights:

  • Rainbow over south downs
  • the view on top of Bury hill
  • the weather!
the low lights:

  • The coach driver who almost wiped me out
  • The pain going up Bury Hill!!!
