After my tentative 0.17 miles the other day, I finally ventured out for my first real ride since mid-October. I made my target the Middleton Railway in South Leeds and chose to cycle back through the regenerating industrial wastelands of South Leeds. There was frost evident everywhere in the shade. I was impressed with the quality of the cycle paths going through central Leeds and I arrived at the railway to find it closed but a kind volunteer let me have a look in the maintenance shed. I made my way home through Holbeck passing the historic Temple Mills and along the newly laid tarmac towpath of the Leeds Liverpool canal. A chilly but nice fifteen miles.

Part of Temple Works. Grade I listed flax mill. It had a turfed roof and was once the largest single room in the world.

Starting from the north Gower village of Crofty, i set off down the Loughor Estuary marsh road. 2° C and an unusual easterly wind instead of the normal westerly meant I was blown along effortlessly. A climb up through the village of Llanrhidian back onto the main north Gower road for a few miles before cutting through the high hedged and twisty lanes past the Fairy Hill hotel. Now the long ascent of Cefn Bryn into the easterly head wind as if I needed more of a challenge. Cefn Bryn is the central spine of the Gower and rewards the rider with panoramic views of both coasts of the Gower. A swift decent and back to the village of Llanrhidian before a sharp right and the climb on to Welsh Moor where the Swansea CTC bunch passed me in the opposition direction all with a cheerful nod. Dropping back down through the villages of Three Crosses, Dunvant and Gowerton before once again turning west to be blown home along the north Gower road where I passed the CTC guys making their way off the Gower. With 24 miles and 1300ft of climbing, thoroughly enjoyed and left me wanting more, which is a shame as I can't get out until next weekend.

Sherwood Pines Red Route, while the other lads were messing in the downhill/jump park I ventured north to Edwinstowe & back again, very muddy & wet in Sherwood Pines the tracks out in the open were frozen but ride-able with care, a very cold but sunny day, 1 off in the Pines adding another scar to my already well scared elbows,

Good views, no wind and bright sunshine all helped make my first ride of 2015 a great one. 20 miles. 2 hours riding time but a few stops for pictures and to admire the views.

I've been avoiding icy paths and roads by trying different main roads. Today I skirted Bolton before going through Kearsley and Whitefield. I didn't know how much fun a hill could be, freewheeling at 27mph thinking, I know I'll have to climb this but it will be worth it! There were 2 more like that but the first was the longest. It was the A667 between Kearsley and Whitefield. I passed several cyclists coming the other way all obviously having a good ride. I'm going to go that way again and get a bit more familiar with the road so I can go even faster if I dare!
