Today's ride resulted in rather more bruises that I had hoped for, but also proved that some car drivers (BMW - I think) are kind and considerate and more importantly, human!

The ride/commute started off badly, by :rain: when the forecast suggest nothing of the kind, so I ignored it and didn't put my waterproof jacket on... then it got heavier but I was going downhill, then it continued and by now I was damp, and decided that it was now pointless putting on my waterproof and 45 minutes after it started to :rain:, it finally stopped... A few miles further on my chain decided that it wasn't going to mesh with the cassette as I tried to pull away at a minor turn onto a major A road (I have to do about 1/2-1 mile on the A54)... The result was that the pedals moved, the bike didn't, there was an awful crunching noise and gravity took over.... I can't land on my left side at all, or for that matter get the foot our of the toeclips in a rush (due to being slightly paralysed down that side) so once I topple too far to the left, the outcome is inevitable. The outer chainring has cut into right my leg, but thankfully was clean enough not to have filled the scratches with muck... and there are rather more physical bruises on my legs than I had hoped for... A BMW driver stayed at the junction and waited until I was back on my feet and then continued to wait until he had seen me back on my bike and cycling - he was genuinely concerned (kind of him, if a touch embarrassing ). Once I was around the corner, a convenient bus stop was located and I was able to check the bike over, which was of course now behaving... more or less. I only checked the chain at the weekend and know it is not yet at 0.75% so think this is just a case of an indexing issue.... But I now have an annoying click at the top of every pedal stroke and predominately on the inner chain ring and I think my right calf has whacked the front derailleur because it is now complaining (chain rattle) loudy in every gear except 50/11 ... I knew of a bike shop that I went passed, so called in there hopeful that there was no major issues. The guy although very busy was concerned enough that it had thrown me from my bike to assist me, but also could find nothing and he checked for chain stretch as well. He did pick up that my front hub has some play in it (which is worrying because the sealed cartridge bearings were only replaced 3,000km ago) but otherwise bike seems OK.

Coming home was much less eventful, and slower mostly due to a headwind, but was also :sun:... bike and I need some TLC this evening but it is a case of me first. It would be a long hot soak in a bath, if we had one... I shall have to settle for a warm shower - it will help to make up for the cold 45 minute on this morning!

Right on my front door step, I spotted this little fellow. A tiny moth I think... its about 7mm wide and 10mm long!

(Edit: since id'ed by @djb1971 as a mint moth )

Not my ride (that was this morning) but my 10 year-old's, who's often been on club and other rides with me.

He's back racing after his broken arm and got his best placing this evening; a 3rd in the Under 10's at York on the last ride on his 'little' bike.

Cue 'proud Daddy moment'

Last ride of the week today as going to visit family for the weekend back up t north. Decided on a flat route of 20.5 miles to see if i could get near an average of 20mph , ambitious but you have to try. Decided to try and keep it steady so not to crash and burn. Arrived back hot and sweaty but still able to push on for the last 5 miles with an average on 18.2mph, not 20mph but v happy. That made it 103 miles this week on the bike and a 500 mile round trip in the car this weekend roll on monday with a day off and a big ride:bicycle:

Somehow I managed to get 2 dry rides in today, I don't know why but someone was ^_^ing on me today.
Going out was fun but nothing eventful happened; coming home was interesting in places due to the flooding and the debris that had been washed down some of the country lanes I ride... There was a thunderstorm at lunchtime whilst I was out with my parents' that left us sitting in their car outside their home for 10 minutes waiting for the rain to ease (no talking, couldn't hear anything other than the rain hammering down on the car roof!)... It was meant to rain on my way home and according to every forecast looked at lightening, torrential rain etc was forecast. It didn't happen, if anything sunblock would have been more suitable :sun:... the only curious event was me getting 'cat called & claw marks made in the air' by a teenage boy as I cycled passed him. Last week I got wolf whistled as well... guess this diet is working ... Anyhow - 2 fast commutes and 2 faster times on 2 existing QOM's and a 22.2kph average has me a happy bunny (don't think I can get any more 2 in there!) given that it was a headwind in both directions today! (yeh - I know what you are thinking, but it did a 120-180 during the course of the day and genuinely was a headwind both ways ...)
No photos - I was expecting very heavy rain so didn't take the camera...

the usual 69.5km in 3hrs 7mins moving time. http://www.strava.com/activities/177325392

I went out wearing shades and factor 50 today and even sniggered when i read "Heavy Rain Forecast" on a road display. Clear skies all around. Right now the view out my window could be mistaken for the view from a North Sea trawler

I drove into that there London today with the bikes on the roof, met missus in Marble Arch, parked the car up then we cycled the 8.7 miles with all the rush hour traffic and all the cycle commuters to Stratford where our hotel is, which is our base for the weekend ready for the RLS 100. Very excited!

More commuting mileage: The legs didn't feel too bad on yesterday's ride. I left slightly early with the intention of taking it easy but was a minute quicker arriving on the ride in. I'd noticed the rear tyre was soft in the morning so did a puncture repair at lunchtime taking out a small thorn. On the way back in the evening I pressed on so as to be back in time to change and go out for the evening. It felt hard work but not as bad as on Wednesday thanks to lighter winds. I passed even bigger queues of traffic which made me feel a bit smug.

Today's effort started with needing my fleece for the first time in a while. The air was cool and damp with an earthy smell from all the harvesting going on that gave quite an autumnal feel. The cloud base was very low too (about 500 to 700 feet I'd estimate) which gave the hills a very moody look as the tops weren't visible. I almost squashed a squirrel again. The legs felt better today and I took another minute off the time getting there (just over 43 minutes for the 10 miles) without trying.

I pressed on again for the evening run and with light winds it felt nice and easy. A motorcyclist gave me a thumbs up as he passed in the slow traffic (not sure if I know anyone with a motorbike ) and I got passed and left behind by a guy on a Ribble Audax.

4 days and over 83 miles of riding for the week - not too bad. Should have used the bike on monday too but I thought I'd get settled before cycling in.

I left home, and crossed Interstate 39 with rain falling, not so much as I couldn't dodge the drops.

I saw tractors going out to mow the verges, over the objections of a little dog in the yard at the crossroads.

25 miles, 531 feet of climbing, not bad for the Prairie State, a good couple of hours and change . I had to get back home and help Mrs. GA shop for travel tomorrow. I rode this ride as an "empathy ride" for @jnrmczip , who does his first 30 miler tomorrow.
