Todays ride was a pootle out to our favourite cake n coffee stop.

Finally got Mrs Aud out of bed and ready to go, but the weather was much colder than it has been. Still the temptation of cake did its job and off we set. This also gave me a chance to test out my new Garmin Edge touring :hyper:

Riding out on the old train line we turned off and headed through Ilminster following the cycle route. going up the climb towards Dillington house i did think Mrs aud would stop, but she went straight up it, so well done to her.

From there it was a nice downhill route and across the moor to curry Mallet.

Cake, or BLT? hmmmm, ok, BLT wins, so 2 BLT's, 1 tea and 1 coffee ordered and we sat in the garden, even the sun came out. Just sitting there, in the sun with some of the best food around was just bliss and we really didnt want to leave.

Then time for the run home, again Mrs Aud did well with the uphill parts and we arrived home after agreeing that we must do this again, but to swap the BLT for the Meat Feast Roll :mrpig:.

25 miles all in.

72 miles with the lads
I met up with @toptom & James at the usual spot at 9.30 a.m and we were out of town & in the countryside within 5 minutes. Several windy, flat-ish miles to warm up and then we were heading up hill to Dunstable Downs where the views of Bedfordshire go on for miles. Down the otherside and the next 10 miles were flat & windy with it.
I had a few pains in my back because I twisted it yesterday cutting the front hedge, normally cycling frees it up but today I was beginning to struggle. The lads were going off in the distance until James turned around to see me limping along. We regrouped, stopped and I said I think I need to go home. I took a couple of pain killers and we agreed to slow the pace down a little and I would carry on for a few more miles while the painkillers kicked in and see how I felt.
After 15 minutes or so I felt good, the pain was fading and I was glad I didn't head home. We were still into the head wind but taking it in turns at the front & before long a couple of left turns meant the head wind was no more.
Uphill to Mentmore and onwards to Wing and Cublington on rolling roads with minimal traffic, this Saturday ride felt more like a Sunday ride.
40 miles in & the back pains were nowhere near as bad and we were chipping along nicely, Tom bunny hopping potholes and me jumping up on the pavement to avoid sliding on gravel while James was shouting at cars!
The biggest climb was up next to the cafe stop in Wendover Woods, the highest point in the Chilterns. The road up through the woods is a nice climb and before long the cafe came into view.
After we left the cafe Tom suggested to extend the route back through Wiggington, Aldbury & up Toms Hill into the Ashridge estate and on to Gaddesden Row, all beautiful cycling country. We all agreed and the next hour in the saddle flew by and we was a couple of miles from home. James peeled off towards home while Tom & myself carried on. We planned to do an extra 20 miles or so until after 4 miles a loud cracking noise came from my bike and the saddle tilted backwards. The seat post had cracked & being integrated in the frame I knew this was serious. B***ocks.
After cutting the ride short & a slow ride home I rang the LBS and told them what happened. "No problem Jay bring it in, it's still under warranty" which put my mind at ease. I'm taking it in Tuesday.
All in all a great ride and looking forward to the next one

A gentle pootle with the ladies today to the Artisan Baker at Park Farm near Staple Fitzpaine, which saw us tuck into some delicious cakes and pastries before going a longer route back to town. Not the warmest day of the week so far but pretty decent once out of the wind, and a good day to bid farewell to the last of the dry weather for a while.

A great setting with the choice of sitting indoors or outside.

We'll definitely be going back, possibly for one of their afternoon cream teas...
