Today I took another detour along the Frome, and I saw a kingfisher flying off, I did hang around for a bit but didn't see him again. How long a stretch of river bank will a kingfisher patrol?
I'm no expert but the kingfishers that I've seen in the river Ravensbourne have spanned about 5 miles. No doubt they go further or they're not the same kingfishers. That said, I doubt that the Ravensbourne, which runs into the Thames, supports many. For me, most sightings have been at tidal areas when the tide is out and river flow is at its most sedate. So, if the Frome is tidal where you saw it and the tide was out and not in spate....

The Frome wouldn't be tidal there... (Eastville Park) In fact it flows into the floating harbour so not tidal at all... And Ive seen them further upstream before at Oldbury Court.

As I say, no expert, but to me they look like strong, flat fliers, maybe 10 - 20 cm above the water, between perches (branches not the fish). None of that little bird swoopy flight thing. Living in a rather large city, it's always a rare pleasure to see kingfishers and it makes my day.

Sorry no pics.
Lots of squawcking and flapping. Looked out window and cat being swooped on by 2 crows. Rescued him and took him indoors, much to his embarrassment .
Coast clear so back outside.
More squwacking, taking it out on a wee sparrow, brought it indoors!
Wee sparrow now rescued and released .

I also came across this egg shell in my daughter's garden. It's bigger than a hen's egg.
Any ideas?

I was driving out of the crematorium car park yesterday when I noticed a lot of people looking skywards and pointing, when I looked up a magnificent red kite was hovering directly above us. It looked absolutely stunning against a cloudless blue sky.
I take no credit for the internet image I have attached , it is just an illustration of the red kite in flight.
