I've seen this pair of swans for I don't know how many years and they always have seven cygnets. This is the first time I've seen them this young though, they normally stay out of the way until they are much bigger.

Lots of Curlews and Lapwings on the high moors this morning calling and displaying in the sunshine. One curlew was very unhappy about a Buzzard soaring around. Buzzards aren't common on the high moors; there is plenty of prey but no trees to perch in so they tend to make feeding sorties and then disappear.

A common shrew scuttled across the road just in front of me. Haven't seen one of those on a ride for a long time

I heard a lot of Starlings hurling abusive language at a Sparrowhawk that flew low across my garden yesterday. In the afternoon the estate was terrorised by a fast flying raptor darting in and out of the houses. I thought it was a Hobby at first but looking at the small images on my camera it looks as though it was a Kestrel. If it was a Kestrel I have never seen one hunting like that before.
I had the wrong lens on at the time.

Here are some shots of the bird, the colouring looks like a Kestrel.
Looks like a Kestrel to me too.

They are very cute and clearly expert at synchronised swimming!

I spotted six cygnets the other day but they are much larger than those. I need to pop back to my local pond to see if there have been any hatchings.

Saw a hare for the first time in ages on this mornings ride. Also some fairly young calves, and when I went through Abbey Park it looked like half of Leicester were looking at the 7 cygnets.
