Red Kites, on Sunday, whilst siting the BSWOW
(it's just ovet the River Wharfe, to the north of Harewood House)

They were circling, then the chap in the next caravan started throwing meat (I assume) out for them, they were swooping down to pick it up off the grass
I've only seen them overhead before, but when half-a-dozen of them are 15 foot away, & at ground level, they're even more impressive!!!

More red kite fun, sat at the back of Flash Bar Cafe on Sunday, high up in the Peak enjoying a pasty and the splendid view:

Next thing, a curlew flies into view, rapidly followed by a red kite. Another curlew appears, and they gang up to harass the raptor.

But what's this? A lapwing joins the fray, and this vicious blighter holds the ring, the curlew exit stage left and the lapwing sees off the kite which slowly leaves, lapwing snapping at it the whole way.

European* Goldfinch collecting nest lining from the stash just now.
Usually we keep sheep's wool in here, but this is some man-made padding fibre.
* as distinct from the American Goldfinch, for our international members.

Watching the vids of fox cubs playing and learning has been interesting and at times laugh out loud funny, but still pics wouldn't really convey much. A few nights ago they were terrified (quite rightly!) by their first encounter with badgers, but just two minutes later were totally unconcerned.

Here in Oxon, you can see more kites than rabbits on some rides, so I often take them for granted - but they are actually reeeally cool!

(I heard yesterday that kites are now actually pushing down the kestrel numbers round these parts, they've been so successful. It's dog-eat-dog out there ... )
