I was out on my bike in Lytham on Saturday and on the Fairhaven marine lake there were a pair of Canada geese with 18 - yes EIGHTEEN! - fluffy yellow goslings! Sorry no photo but they were up the end where the Spitfire on a pole is.

Canada geese usually rely on creches, where a pair of adults will look after the offspring of other pairs as well as their own.
Normal clutch size is 2 to 8 eggs.

Then the other parents must've been in hiding, or feeding at a different site, as the only other Canadas I saw at Fairhaven were a pair with just four goslings. The littl'uns in the 'nursery school' all looked as if they were hatched at the same time or within a day or so of each other. I'd not heard of them running creches, do the mothers have to book them in in advance or can they drop the babies off as and when is convenient? LOL!

That's just what they do! The other parents go off to feed in different areas, which I suppose reduces the pressure on food resources around the nest sites. I don't know whether there's a rota of carers, but I wouldn't be surprised. Apologies for the Daily Wail link:
