I briefly went out with a Mormon lady, about 18 years my senior at the time. It struck me that the more a religion proscribes, forbids and oppresses, the more they seem to want to do these things.

I’m a christian by upbringing ... I tried to live by the code ... 10 commandments and all that .... but failed most of them ... all of them to be honest ..
For probably the last 10 years i’ve tried a different approach to life ... KARMA ... well my adulterated version ...
I try to do good things for people ... to be kind, to stand in support of those that ask or patently need help ..
Nothing great ... If your stopped with a puncture i’m the guy that pulls over in the van and offers help ...
Towed cars out of floods and ditches, just try to be helpful ... in the hope some of the KARMA may come back at me ...

this is based on absolutely no evidence whatsoever
what it does do it make you feel better about yourself because you have done something good for someone
or - conversely - you have seen someone do something bad and rather than getting mad/stressed you 'know' that bad things will catch up with them
so - e.g. - if you let someone in at a motorway junction - then you feel that you are a nice person - and next time someone lets you in then you believe that it is due to what you did in the past
if someone comes down the slip road at 90 and forces their way in - then you back off and let the idiot go screaming up in his wavy pattern around all 3/4 lanes - knowing that you can leave it to karma and you don't need to worry about it
