I quite like the Buddhist view that how you live this life affects your next one, there aren't that many blue whales... but just think there's a lot more worms than humans and billions more insects... and as for the number of bacteria! Trillions of people must've been very very bad.

More wheels than sense
In other news a nurse was forced out of her job and relegated to a more menial job and eventually resigned all because she refused to hide her crucifix while fellow workers belonging to other groups wore religious symbols. She is taking her hospital employer to a tribunal.
Don’t get me wrong I’m also a non believer but there has to be an even playing field for those that believe in this stuff.
I think the older you get and the closer you get to ‘meeting your maker‘ the more you believe. This was certainly the case with my mother.

Got a link to that ?

Theres a current one in the Fail. If what she is saying is true, the nothers were able to wear necklaces and efen earrings without challenge, but her crucifix necklace drew the ire of her employers.

If that should be true then it is unacceptable. But who really knows?

See, thats interesting - a most un Christian Christian.

This is like my views on party politics. I believe in an almighty creator, a grand architect, them what you will, but have no interest in or truck with organised religion.

Technically im Jewish, being born to a Jewish mother, but my Dad was having none of it, told her I could make up my own mind when I'm old enough. I know exactly where he was coming from now.

On the funny side, I married a Catholic lass and being a nice Jew boy (I sometimes play up to it a bit to annoy them) some of the more fanatical members of her family seemed to think she was marrying Satan himself.

Ah but were you a Catholic Jew or a Protestant Jew?

All of the stalwart epics in the bible, genesis, flood etc are rewrites of much older stories. Most cultures have a creation and destruction myth. The epic of Gilgamesh is almost a word for word copy but predates genesis by a few thousand years. If there were a supreme being of any kind I think it was/is an external civilisation/s from another planet.

I recall a conversation with my mum when I was but a teenager, and somehow we got to religion, and she said "Me and your dad wanted you to make up your own mind so we didn't push anything either way". "But you used to make me go to Sunday school". My mum paused for a moment then looked at me as if I was daft "What are you talking about? You only went twice". It seemed I'd gone willingly the first time, as it was very much the done thing in our west Wales village, and then because it was so dull, had to be conned into it the second time, then put my foot down and never went again.

Even as a very small child it came over as nonsense and I'd respond "who made God then?" so never got as far as God having to torture Jesus to death so that only then would this all powerful being be "allowed" (by his own rules presumably) to let us off

We don't like uncertainty / not knowing...

So we've created 'certainty' with belief systems to explain things, however 'unbelievable' they may seem to some.

If we didn't have 'faiths' to explain things we'd have to invent some other belief systems like politics to explain life and this thread would get shut down and moved to 'the other place'...

well something god has in common with one or two folks over there - no sense of humour.
which is perhaps why one or two over there see themselves as god.

I am also a non believer but for those who are believers, is their God just for planet earth or the whole universe? If that's the case, how does their God travel across it as there is no way Earth is the only inhabited planet considering there are billions of planets.
