Just out of interest why is wearing a helmet a detrimental thing? Apart from the looks... Is there evidence to say you are more likely to get brain damage by hitting your head on the floor with a helmet on?
I discussed the wearing of helmets both cycle and motor cycle with a neurological colleague .

His opinion is that it is the sudden deceleration of the head hitting a solid object that causes the injury to the brain due to the impacting with inside of the skull, this occurs due to the brain being able to move within the skull

He would however recommend wearing a helmet to lesson the chance of penetration injury. He is a cyclist but feels the wearing of helmets should be left to the individual.

I reckon that if you laid all the cyclists who reckon their lives were saved by a helmet along the M25 the cops would nick you.

Thanks for your sarcastic reply Glenn - extremely welcome on a friendly forum like this I am sure.

I am not arguing for or against helmet use or compulsory use, just trying to understand why people think it's a bad idea to wear one.

Maybe you haven't had a friend close to death due to an accident. Maybe if you had you might not be so quick with the clever reply.
Good response. It appears that Glenn's opinions are the only valid ones

Why does the wearing of helmets cause so much anxt.It is the individuals decision to wear a helmet.
My enjoyment of cycling is not diminished by wearing a helmet.

Well, not really. I have an opinion formed by reading the evidence, looking at what experts say and making my own mind up after riding 3000 miles a year for thirty years.

Joffey has an opinion based on a collision involving a man he won't name in circumstances he refuses to describe involving a doctor who remains anonymous.

There is a valid point in that personal choice is exactly the way it should be

Unfortunately when someone like Wiggins tells the press they should be made compulsory it makes it difficult to maintain that freedom

I've highlighted the key word. If you want to wear one please do so, but if you turn round and tell me to do so, I will tell you where you can stick it.
