So many pretentious la-di-dahs on there (over) using the word 'one' when describing a person and phrases like 'ad hominem' as though this renders them in some way admirable. Same names over and over again indulging in a petty-minded bickerfest and think they're being big and clever trying to score points off each other. It's too sad to venture over there and witness it all.

I suspect if Shaun removed anyone who's cycling contribution to CycleChat is 10% or less of their posts (low benchmark I know) then most of the problems people have expressed about SC&P would also disapper overnight.
Hmm, I'd be in danger an' all, I reckon. The beer thread is pretty much all I do on here these days.

Used to feel the same...or similar.
But if you do spend time in there it becomes clear that the people that you are talking about have a genuine frustration...sometimes exasperation at the lack of knowledge or even appetite for knowledge.

If you were to translate sc&p into "football teams" can you imagine the insults, tribalism and hatred that would occur from people very educated on the topic (most with a lifetime of experience dedicated to it) who cannot imagine the kind of person who doesn't understand, let alone those who don't want to and just quote goggles opinion.

That is pretty much what we are dealing with. Some, not all of the posters in sc&p are lifetime experts, or dedicated to their beliefs through education and lifestyle ...with that translation, you can feel their
frustration.

This doesn't excuse the behaviour, it's wrong as it would be in a football thread...but I think it's an accurate explanation of the attitudes that occur

Aye, that would be the logical thing do do, if the usual suspects wouldn't promptly declare your experience as irrelevant, an anecdote (have you got statistics for that?) or even an abomination of thought.
Sometimes I start to read what seems an interesting op, it soon becomes a slander match, I give up, takes too long to sift the informative bits from the bickering.
Must say, the "society" bit of the board is alien to me, can't relate at all, what's the point of posting my opinions, would only be accused of trolling.
That thing does still wind me up...as it does in the great helmet debate. The dismissal of intuitive decision making is frustrating. Everything has to have empirical evidence or its a lie (if it's not on camera it didn't happen).

Ask any cosmologist or quantum physicist how they came up with a theory (clue is in the title) that has shaped our lives.

Hmm, using the football analogy though, you can have a valid level of knowledge and understanding of football, or a particular aspect of it and a legitimate interest or similar lifetime dedication and subject matter expertise but a different way of expressing/receiving that.

In certain areas of the stadium on match days you can have a nuanced and informative discussion with opposition fans, in other areas you can say exactly the same thing but will just get howled down regardless and removed by the stewards for your own safety. Often from fans who will then scream much the same things at much the same players but in 'their' way.

It does a disservice to a lot of people on here to denigrate by comparison the non SC&P contributiors who simply do not wish to don a suit of armour and fight/watch a verbal war of attrition as a leisure activity.

I'm sure all that is true. I'm not directly comparing football fans to sc&P contributors (I am not talking about the non contributers,) other than to say that each is passionate about the topic and likely to show a lack of patience to those who are not...if they make an uneducated comment.

I think if you accept this of many sc&p posters then it will go a long way to help explain their attitudes...whilst not forgiving them.

I generally ignore news and current affairs these days as I find life less stressful anyway but the SCP seems to be a closed shop of experts (and some do appear to know a lot in fairness and others like to think they know a lot) hashing out the same opinions and the same insults and derision of anyone who dares to voice an opinion different than theirs.

It's not unlike reading the comments section of the Daily Mail!

Personally, i think the mods do an excellent job considering the diversity of the forum. No mod can like every area of the forum, but they all carry out their duties to the best of theyre abilities and as impartial as they can. However, the mods are allowed to have opinions just like everyone else. I think SNSSO comments above were quite tongue in cheek and not offensive to anyone. Keep up the good work mods :bravo:

I'd be interested to know just what people think the role of being a 'moderator' should involve then, other than making judgements about stuff they might not be interested in. If it's so frustrating and boring, why not give it up?
See, this is typical of a SC&P reply. It looks like a rather rude and pointed attack...and could result in a pointless rebuff from satnav...but it carries a really good point and most likely (I hope) isn't meant as a slant on satnav, just a confusion over her expectations....a more cafe way to have asked the question might have been , sorry satnav but you live by the sword and die by the sword...you really should have read that small print....but an emotional connection is often considered a weakness as if trying to empathise is a waste of time or valuable intellect

It is also the reason I didn't respond.
If you knew how much of our time is spent dealing with the content in SC&P compared to the rest of CC you would understand. But I also understand you have no idea how much time is spent dealing with SC&P content (about 95% btw) and yes, I am seriously reconsidering my being a moderator here simply because of SC&P. I am so very glad that we don't have a similar area on the other forum I am a moderator on, and the sole moderator at that.

Damn right. I am a lifetime expert on the finer points of electricity pylon design and anyone who ventures to opine that the

And that is the response that newts rather sharp reply has missed out on. Its missed the opportunity to understand how sc&p impacts on the forum from a moderators perspective and also how draining the constant requirement to deal with it is.

Don't leave sat nav, good...human..
Mods are one of the things that make shauns forum so personal. Perhaps just add a rider to your contract!
