I have friend who is now seventy who was Christened Richard but has been known to his friends as Dick since his late teens He's a successful architect and was recently asked to join a select club of the great and the good called Richard. I have no idea how many of them are Dicks.

My brother's Dick always has been, never Richard, he's 69 now. We both worked with another chap called Dick, he'd be in his late seventies now. There was a lad in school also called Dicky, he was very cool. Last I heard of him he was living in a commune in Skelmersdale, that would have been around 1976.

I dabbled with TM when I was seventeen but I always fell asleep. A childhood friend who I met at nursery school got seriously involved for decades, moved to the US but gave it up in favour of multiple marriages and ballroom dancing.

Skelmersdale seems positively normal in comparison.

I've nothing against Dereks but I only know of Derek Jarman, the film director. He had a house on a pebbly beach looking out at a featureless North Sea and made nasty films when I was younger.

Yes, they own Hunts Coaches in Alford Lincolnshire. I also had a Diane Kerr in my class at school; her Brother was Wayne, and my eldest had a Richard head in his class at school.

There was a Dick at a place I worked, he was only about 5ft 3iin, known as little Dick.
