Last summer, when cycling in Holland, we'd camped up for the night when we were caught in the middle of a huge electrical storm. I remember feeling very vulnerable every time the lightening light up our tent.

Last September I went for my first ever cycle ride in the Alps. Left Mrs Donger in the gite near Annecy and went off for a ride along the fantastic cycle way up the valley towards Albertville. Told her I'd only be an hour or so, but got a bit carried away (as you do). At my furthest point from the house, I heard an ominous rumbling sound and looked back in the direction I had to travel home, only to see a filthy black cloud and the most perfect show of multi-coloured fork lightning I have ever seen. There I was right in the middle of the valley with no shelter to be found anywhere - apart from under one particularly large tree - and even I am not that stupid.. All the other cyclists and roller bladers that I had been sharing the path with had somehow melted away and I was the only idiot still out in it. For the next 30 minutes there followed the worst thunder storm I have ever been out in - a proper artillery barrage all around me. Actually saw a couple of ground strikes within a mile of me.
All I could think was to stay on the bike and make sure I didn't put a foot down, because at least it had rubber tyres. That is probably the fastest 9 miles I have ever done.:bicycle:. I got home looking shell-shocked and absolutely soaked through, and my kit never did dry out properly before the end of my holiday. While I would never previously have worried about being out in the rain, I'll definitely not be going out cycling in the mountains during bad weather again. The weather changes so fast.

Today I decided to go cycling in the rain and I have to say it wasn't so bad. I have one bike ready for wet weather now, the Brooks saddle has gone and mudguards on. An old pair of bibs on, over shoes, but I really need to get myself a good waterproof jacket. I have a cheap Aldi waterproof jacket which is OK for a short ride but after a while it gets too hot. I still rather walk in the rain though ^_^

I have a dog and don't have a car so walking and cycling in the rain are just part of life. When it's raining and cold, it's just miserable but it's ok from April-October so long as I can keep warm. And I mind even less if I've got somewhere to go/be but it is annoying when I want to enjoy the views but all I can see is a solid wall of grey.

It's bloody miserable imo and best avoided if at all possible.

I get too hot, fields/footpaths etc become filthy quagmires and rocks/stiles etc become slippery.

And if it is warm whilst raining there are bloody flies everywhere.

A story about rain.Between 1972 and 1983 i was a delivery postman. One morning i was delivering on Street Lane,on my side it was dry on the other side it was raining. So i walked in to the road and stood in the middle i have never had that experience since.
