I think the shirt is a great idea and am happy to take part in cycling with it (on or off). Regarding washing it - I was told that the signatures in permanent marker need to be ironed beforehand just to 'set' them. Our daughter has an old shirt signed by everyone when she was leaving school - we used permanent pen and the iron and it washes as good as new every time.

I was wondering if the shirt with all the signatures could be copied and that we all buy one?

ah - brilliant. There you go, that's the answer to that one.

Yes, that's true enough. Who's going to start? I will if you like. I could meet Mr Paul in Worcester, or something.

You could meet me as well, ;) but I am not cycling at the moment. Ab Chandler also lives in Worcestershire. Perhaps we could have a mini-meet up one lunch time:smile:. There is also another member near here, but their location is not on their forum profile, so I will not reveal it.
Just remembered another member near Worcester, whose avatar is a pint of liquid refreshment, leading me to believe he would know a suitable place to meet.

If the current CC jersey person (who-ever that is) doesn't want to get involved, and there's enough* demand, I guess that I could do the ordering for the replicas (me & my big mouth!).

Though if the jersey goes to all the riders on the map, each one having it for an average of a week, it would be a couple of years before I'd need to do anything. xx(

(* intentionally vague criteria there  )

Cool. Has anyone ordered one of these shirts? We could be the ones to start it off!

Should the participants sign their real names or 'sign' using their forum nomenclaturage?

If I were to ride my electric bike would I spoil the whole thing for everyone?

Will 1550 signatures fit on one jersey?

Can Bonj devise a computer programme to calculate the shortest possible route?

Has anyone calculated how many years this could take?

Right.

Here's the deal. Don't wear it, don't wash it. If we did then it would be a mess by the time we've finished. the first bunch of sigs would be fading away with all those washes.

I'd have thought that the best start place would be farthest north or south.
ok. I'll accept your decision going on the fact that it seems to be the consensus and that it was you as the original idea thinker-up have put your foot down. But I might only be able to take it to marinyork's house on account of the fact that I would need a rucksack ;) (i could just put the panniers back on...)

either/both, depending on what they prefer. I think the fewer rules we have the better. Although we might want to restrict the amount of space people can take up.

As long as you don't cause any climate change...

I doubt 1500 people will be taking part. But I would guess a lot would, if it's a blank jersey. If not, then just write small.

Funny you should mention that, the business i'm in is fairly heavily into maps and routing and so on. However I don't think work would be too chuffed at me spending lots of time on such a non-money-making solution, and I think trying to run visual studio AND ms mappoint on my home car-boot-sale-sourced computer with its measly half-gig of ram would cause either me, or it, or quite probably both, to have a heart attack. something I'm not THAT keen on happening.

If you want to provide a fast computer with 4G ram and scsi drives however mickle then I'll certainly have a go.

quite possibly several!

What's a '4G ram and scsi drives' when its at home?

four gigabytes of RAM, i.e. memory, and hard drives conneted by SCSI interface (not sure what it stands for) as opposed to most computer's hard drives which are either IDE or SATA interfaces. SCSI is faster, and the drives themselves are much more expensive for an equivalent storage size.

I always thought the traveling salesman problem was a difficult one to solve, especially when there are a large number of stops (such as in this case). Just out of interest bonj, how would you go about solving it? Would it be a true solution or an approximation?

Look, it all worked out for the C+ jersey in the end didn't it? I know it took ages (I was only vaguely aware of it), but I think there were great long gaps between exchanges. We need to ask someone who took part in that relay. Am I right in thinking that means Chuffy? Anyway, if it takes a while, that's all part of the fun - we have a coordinating thread set up, it doesn't have to be the most efficient route, really it just needs to be one that allows forummers who want to and can cover the distance, to meet up. Too many 'rules' just spoil the fun. So if Keith Oates wanted to sign it, we ought to allow it to be posted, because it's the inclusion that counts.

I don't suppose it'll need to go round all 1500 members, just those who want to take part (how about I set up a separate thread now to canvass) - and not everyone has to carry it far, or at all - for example if Mickle, Spandex and I went for a beer as we do sometimes, we could all sign it in one fell swoop, and I or one of them could take it to, say, Uncle Phil, or someone in Leeds. I'd suggest carrying it, and putting it on for a photo at the handover/signing - that keeps it cleaner, and solves the size issue - no one jersey is going fit us all, and a jersey the wrong size (esp too small) would be uncomfortable to ride any distance in.

I suggest we see if we can use one of the reject Friedly shirts, it might be the cheapest option. It could then start with Will, if he wants in on it, or he could send it to a suitable starter. If one jersey got full up of signatures, we could start on another, from the last port of call, like a relay.

As for what to do with it, well, I think it would be nice to consult Admin, and offer it to him, as he did so much to set this place up for us. If he wanted to raffle it among us, for charity, that would be fine too.

I believe that it would necessarily be an approximation as there is no true solution to this problem.
