it doesn't have to go south to north or north to south, as such, it just goes any way we want really. I suppose as long as everyone who wants to participate gets to cycle some distance in it, and sign it, and that it goes round everyone with as minimum non-cycling transport as possible, then it doesn't really matter. Although, to be honest, I think some non-cycle transport is going to have to be done at some point, although it'd be nicer if it was bike to train station, bike on train, then bike from train station to other person's house, than car. Other things to take into account are, if several people live in the same area, do they want to meet up and cycle together? Do some people who live far apart BOTH want to cycle to some mid-point halfway between?
Also some people are naturally going to be more inclined to cycle long distances than others. Then you've got people's different schedules, time off work, family commitments, etc. etc.....
it's going to be far too difficult to organise it all at once and plan out the entire route from the start. It'd probably be a lot better to just do it ad-hoc, and see how it goes, and just post in a new thread the details of where it's been and who's got it and where they are. But it'd be nice to plot on a new map all the routes the jersey travels, and who with.

I'll add will and amend ChrisKH tomorrow.

I like the sound of an ad-hoc route - and watching it 'evolve' on a map. Mrs McD did a cycle from St Malo (near Jersey) to Chamonix (near Geneva) a few years ago. I couldn't join her on that, so it's a route I've fancied doing at some point. So put me down for that leg - unless Will wants to meet me half way.

Who knows, I might be able to persuade someone in, say, Rennes to signup for the board - and then give them the Jersey and tell them they've to cycle to Geneva

An ad-hoc route would be good, yes. And I think that it might be allowed to take by train, if the bike is going too, like bonj says. I find myself up in the Borders twice a year normally, so if it happened to be useful to take it with me...

It would be better if it was all by bike of course.

It's going to take some time, but then, there's not really a hurry is there?

basically, just do it. Somebody needs to get a jersey, probably a size L or even XL, so it'll fit everybody (it's going to be a bit too big on the smaller of us).
And it also needs to be plain, so everybody can sign it, and quite cheap.

Theoretically, there's no reason why there has to be just one. There could be several jerseys going round. e.g. if someone's up for a trip in the north at the same time as someone else's up for a trip in the south, then they could both be happening at once. Also if people have got grand plans of touring abroad to see some of the foreign fellas then it's going to bottleneck while they're away with it.

Um, isn't it supposed to be a cyclechat jersey? No reason why we can't sign one of those, unless anyone is so new to writing that they can't do it without lined paper...

One of the reject friedly ones, if we can get it cheap/for nothing would be best. And are we all going to wear it, or just carry it with us? If we wear it, it's going to need washing eventually, in which case we all have to make sure we sign in fabricdye pens or maybe permanent marker.

I think the point is that there is one and it's a venerable object. And it doesn't really matter how long it takes. The C+ jersey, that took years didn't it?

One would seem to be best imo too,as it has a specail meaning to it,if you know what i mean.
And i would be carrying it,as i dont think a triple x would be practical,if you can actualy get one that size?

nah - the signatures have got to be all over it in different directions, scruffily - like on somebody's pot leg.
mine's going to have really short, wide letters, like:

and hopefully bigger than everybody elses. possibly even engulfing somebody else's.

Very permanent markers, or like you say special fabric pens. And only put it in on 30deg C. and it should be ok.

Ah, ok, maybe you can carry it then col

I see what you mean about it being more special if there's only one, but at the end of the day, who's going to keep it? And what if they lose it, or their dog eats it or something...
The advantages to there being several, is that (a) there's going to be more jersey-carrying activity going on at any one time, thus maximising people's involvement, and ( it's going to take longer for them all to get round all of us - making it more indefinite. We don't want it to just sort of fizzle out and be an anticlimax when it finishes - I can see it being like, did you ever have lego as a kid and it was a bit of an anti climax when you completed a really complex model?

If we wear it, it could make for some tricky negotiation as to where the changeover takes place.:blush:
wouldn't need to be that tricky.

I wasn't thinking of us wearing it, but carrying it.

Think about it -if we're all signing it, it can't be washed.

But if we are all wearing it, bagsy first!!

nah, wear it and each person washes it. Just don't do it in biro or pencil, do it in a permanent marker.
What's the point in having a jersey if no-one's going to be wearing it?

If we all carry it, who's EVER going to wear it?

Could be kept by the forum owner, and raffled for charity, the winner gets it.

I don't know about anybody else but I wouldn't want to KEEP it indefinitely, I'd just want to see it going round.

i'm all for an ad-hoc relay, although who/how are we going to coordinate it? There may be people who'd like to be involved but who aren't on the map.

i'd love to take part, but would prefer to carry it, as i'd not want to be responsible for destroying during the washing process. (our machine has a secret setting which mrs lfg uses to eat or change shape of garments)

Any ideas for raisng some money for charity in the process?
