Preston. Never been to such a grumpy place as Preston.

It's not grumpy, but it's definitely getting rougher. And Burnslack Road in Ribbleton is apparently one of the worst streets in the country - I looked at a flat there once, before I knew this, and I was scared sh*tless in broad daylight!!!

May I suggest Canvey Island, It's a terrible place but for some reason I quite like it?

I've worked in some really grim spots all over the country, but in England, Boston in Linconshire takes some beating..... and if you go there after dark on a Friday night so will you.
I'm from there, but really dislike Lincolnshire, industrial farming and small towns that are cultural no-mans land. Most other places you can either find some peace in the rural environment or get lost in the city, it looses on both counts.

Re: doncaster, it's not that bad, but a major transit point on the rail network so every sees how crap it is.

Re: mythyr. Lived in Pontypridd for a couple of years on my first job after graduating. Even tho you could buy a terrace house for several grand there then they used to laugh what a shithole Mythyr was. Worked in Cardiff so never had reason to go that way, not sure they would have appriciated the accent. Did they make the slag heap from the mines a tourist attraction I forget?

Basildon. I ran out of driving hours there once and had to overnight. What a dump.
Actually I find going anywhere in the South East inordinately depressing. I don't mean to be offensive, but anywhere on the M1 from Northampton southwards seems really soulless and bland.

To be fair, it was actually my own fault I ended up there. I was supposed to go to the Argos depot at Basildon then go back to the yard, but for some reason I'd got it into my head that I was going to Argos at Bridgewater, which is, er, not near Basildon. So I wasted about six hours' driving because I went there first, and only realised my mistake when the Bridgewater security guard pointed out the word "Basildon" on my notes.
