I had the misfortune to have to travel to Dagenham for work a few weeks back, gees, what a dump.Maybe it has got worse since Ford moved most of it's production away from the area, but it was just depressing, dirty and horrible.

It's certainly grim. I lived there for the first 18 years of my life and it wasn't so bad then (60's & early 70's) but I still couldn't get away fast enough!

My votes go to Bridgwater, Merthyr and Milton Keynes.
I left submitting my MA dissertatationto the last minute so I drove from Somerset to Milton Keynes on the morning of hand in. It took an hour from getting to MK to find the campus with their visitor friendly roundabout system.
People often mention Milton Keynes as a hellhole, but would say it's just a little odd. It's a pretty nice place to live tbh, just has this odd feel to it, with the layout, hidden road system, the roundabouts and the town centre being a shopping centre with no pubs, and all the pubs in glass office buildings, and that great skidome dominating the skyline. The PC murial near the library with a load of multiracial kids looking like punk rockers must be 30yrs old and made you feel like you'd been transported to some parellel universe circa 1978. Has a character all of it's own anyhow, good or bad.

The West Midlands. All of it. If only someone would be kind enough to flatten the lot, I wouldn't get stuck there every time I travel between Bristol and the north west. I'm not sure if it's the getting stuck in traffic, or having to look at the sheer soulessness of it all that's the worst aspect.

Oi, you leave 'Nam alone.

I lived either side of it (Seven Kings & Hornchurch) & had many driving pupils in Dag. Once you get to know them the people there are the salt of the earth, solid working class with a great loyalty to the community..

In Britain

For me in Scotland it's got to be Cumbernauld. Just a real toilet with no soul

In England it's got to be South Sheilds - Put myself through a tiling course a few years back to save money by not having to pay contractors. Met some good guys on the course that made it slightly bearable but the pubs, restuarants and shops were rotten.

I was staying where all the B&Bs where and loads of contractors were based during the week, who were working locally. The only good thing was the pubs were full of wee tarts with very little clothing on trying to get drinks bought for them. ;)

Not that I was tempted but it's amazing what a girl from the area will do for a Bacardi Breezer in the middle of a busy pub!

There are a lot worse places than Shields in this fair Isle. The beach is nice!

Bradford.

Oh and Pagham. Once spent an excruciating week on holiday there with a mate and his family. My mate and his family were fine but Pagham was just dead.

The ONLY thing I can recall clearly is staring out of the lounge window through a telescope at a womans breasts as she walked past on the other side of the road. When I scanned up to see what she looked like face wise, the indignant expression on her face was PRICELESS.
