There was a time (and still is maybe) when playing with mock guns and swords became 'not ok, frowned upon'. We all played cowboys as kids and perhaps as the above became frowned upon, the desire for the media to show westerns fell away...so the cycle was broken. Or perhaps we (people) just grew out of it and wanted something different.
It's the same with horror, the 70s and 80s were awash with proper horror films...mostly gone now, you rarely see them anymore.
Things come and go...
I also played Cowboys and Indians and in my "career" killed thousands of indians. Let them sue me if they want. I'm not apologising or guilt-washing those killings.
As for cheesy horror....now there's another under-rated genre. What's not to like about a bunch of handsome/pretty 20-somethings going for a dirty weekend in a cabin (with lots of eau naturel swimming) in the woods where a maniac with an axe lurks in the bushes?
I've spent many an insomniac night watching one or othere version of that theme.
