And in British films the baddies were slimy posh sorts with goatee beards.

Oh, yes, the spaghetti westerns of my childhood.
Used to love watching a good one, I was always routing for the Indians!

You are probably correct.
Although, what I remember is the Indians ambushing the cowboys, while the goodies and the baddies were both white, fighting each other.

There weren't any Indians in the spaghetti westerns.

But, fun fact, the Sadhill Cemetery set has been rebuilt.

None that I recall in the well known Sergio Leone classics, but there must have been some that featured them.

There have been quite a few western "style" shows and movies, especially on Paramount+ and Apple TV. But few of them have that proper western feel. They are mostly about acquiring or protecting land. Terrestrial TV seems to favour dating shows, reality TV and other claptrap. But that's the world we now live in. The masses bring in the revenue and apparently that's what they like
A lot of Westerns were about land though. Ranchers fencing off land, water rights disputes, mining claims etc.

Weird stuff about glorification of the American foundation myth.
True but I just regard them as fantasy. The classic spaghetti westerns are almost in a parallel universe; the geography and the timelines are so far off reality.
Most of the films supposedly featuring earlier history (mediaeval, Vikings, Romans) are total nonsense too but can still be entertaining.

Actually thinking about it, there are surprisingly few movies about the actual foundation, the war of independence. From a nation where a single date has such a huge significance, you'd think there'd be more.

Too much credit would have to be given to the French, but we are sailing close to the political. 😉

Not a movie but a superb series set in that era is ‘Turncoat: Washington’s Spies’.

I was surprised to learn that the first military use of a submarine occurred during that conflict. Such an incident does feature in one episode.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly was set in the middle of the civil war. It is pretty intrinsic to the plot.

So was the Outlaw Josey Wales. Underrated and ahead of its time, that one.
