Been enjoying Clarkson's Farm again. Would be interested in @mudsticks views on what he's been doing - or does she only post in that other place now?
Hi Joey,
Not been posting either place for a little while tbh

What do I think of boorish misogynist oaf Clarkson suddenly getting all outraged at the difficulties farmers face in making a living in the UK, or whilst tussling with the planning system?

Now that he's actually experienced those things a tiny bit - (Only for a couple of years mind - whilst still of course making plenty of dosh out of being crass on the telly )

Hmmn, well I might say something like "Welcome to our world
What took you so long??"

He (and others) seem to think he's being singled out for unfair treatment by the LA planning system

He's not - it's just how it is .
And although there are plenty of instances where it does seem to be unfair - due process for development on agricultural land has to be gone through - if it didn't most of it would have been bought up and built on by now.

It's taken me well over twenty years to go from landless agricultural worker, to farm owner - making a living and getting pp to live on what was a bare-land holding.
Land bought with a mortgage that had to be paid with the proceeds of farmin.

And good chunk of that difficulty has been caused by the planning system.
I didn't have a big load of money to do it with.

Clarkson bought his farm with money made elsewhere right?
And then he 'discovers' that making a living from growing food isn't all that easy - and that the planning system can be obstructive - well I don't think that either of those phenomena were ever big ol' secrets.

Maybe I'd better brush up on my gammony unreconstructed 'jokes' about eco-loons, and weird humiliation fantasies about women-i-dont-happen-to-like so that I'm ready in case the telly people turn up 👍🏼

Ps - hope the eco nails are doing well 😊

Thanks Mudders. I think series 1 was initially "Top Gear does farming" but it's moved on from there. Seeing him genuinely upset at slaughtering sheep was a turning point and it changed from daft tractor stunts to actually interesting info about farming. He may be a git but millions of people who had no idea about agriculture have had an insight now. Liked his wildflower meadow, the bees and the chickens being used to improve the soil.

Moved on from eco nails by the way. I'm now a Carbon Literacy trainer and in charge of sustainability at work. About to start delivering sustainability training in the construction industry.

Nice one - my son's flatmate in Glasgow is in the same line of business, you may have even rubbed clipboards 🤔

I take your point about CF informing folks who didn't know about farming, and you'll be unsurprised to hear I haven't actually watched it, I really can't stand the man..

The problem with encouraging bees with wildflowers onto land adjacent to where agrochemicals are still being used is that they get contaminated with these toxins, and carry them back to the hive, with disastrous results.
So what at first glance looks like a 'good thing' maybe isn't so much.

You'll be all too familiar with the hazards of greenwashing in your line of work, I suspect.

Ok I'm prejudging perhaps , but I suspect the really crucial details like this get glossed over in progs like CF.

But this is the telly thread so I'd better not go on.

Plus I have chickens (and all their anti bird flu paraphernalia) to move onto fresh ground - they do do a good job of clearing crop aftermath, and contribute some fertility too. 🐔🐔🐔🐔

Just watched Ep1 S2, I'm going to enjoy this again I think.

Ended up binging the whole series last night, its very good and a lot less baffoonery seems to take place. The calf birthing reminded me a lot of another farming programme I enjoyed set in Yorkshire, not 'Our Yorkshire Farm' but a general look at several farms/outdoor life around yorkshire. Cant remember what thats called right now.

If you don't like JC you arn't going to like this, but it is an entertaining show about farming that due to the presenters fanbase has probably crossed into a lot of people's viewing habits that wouldn't have watched a farming show. Plus as a little bonus Kaleb (young lad that helps him) now appears to be more popular than JC on the show, something they play into a few times.

It's a shame JC himself causes so much aggro in everything else he does he's probably caused the cancellation of this show, and others, which will impact a lot more people than him. Something I'll leave for NACA though!

Enjoy Clarkson's Farm if you watch it, if you don't like there are plenty of other JC shows without farming or farming shows without JC that you might! :okay:

The Gold - BBC iPlayer Brinks Matt heist, really it's very good.

We've only watched the two Eps on "real" TV - excellent! I don't normally like stuff "loosely based on real events", but it has a couple of trump cards:
- Charlotte Spencer is excellent as the spikey east london half of the detective duo; and
- There's exactly enough humourous dialog sprinkled throughout. Gives it a real zing!

Drawback: Jack Lawden looks waaaay to much like Rhys Darby (Flight of the Conchords etc) with that hairdo. Makes him impossible to take seriously!

I think you have to forget all about the Jeremy Clarkson Top Gear cartoon character, the Jeremy the Farmer is clueless, but does seem to care that he has wages to pay, bills to pay, etc yet some oaf at the council meeting claims “You don’t need to make an income” the farm does, so that the staff get paid is lost on these people, blocking the building of a farm track, something his land manager says is unheard of, just vindictive and spiteful because the council think JC the Top Gear caricature is who they’re dealing with

'Diesel Brothers' (Discovery Channel)

The refurbished Gama-Goat episode

Think of it as a wheeled Hagglund BV206, as like that the Goat is amphibious

I cannot comment on whether the council behaved fairly, but who do you think created this "caricature"?? Do you think he was coerced to behave badly against his will? Like when he thumped a production assistant? Or suggested the public pelt a black woman with excrement.
Poor old picked-on JC ...

"Sisyphus" - a Korean time travel sci fi series

Story concerns a young tech genius who is the key figure in his successful high tech company doing unspecified quantum stuff. Then at a big conference various strange people variously try and kill him or help him escape. Narrative jumps around between the present and a post apocalyptic future. It seems he is going to invent a time machine and various factions from the future are trying to stop him, help him, and / or get hold of his design.

We're about half way through now and it is really good. Some episodes are action oriented (plausibly realistic) and others are contemplation of regret, duty, and so on. A particular strength is that all the various players seemingly have their own challenges and (as yet unclear) motivations / duties rather than being cardboard villains.

So 6 other farms could go to the wall, along with all those employed and all the industries serving those farms lose customers all because a plan for them to have guaranteed income via the planned restaurant and the supplying of food to it, because a vindictive council can see beyond it’s blinkered view, it’s nothing to do with making out he is racist, a lot of people now cannot stand either Harry or Meghan, it’s nothing to do with her background she is just a horrible self centered person, that’s all I’m saying about her, well done for trying to get this locked

OK, so try this:
remove H***y & M****n from the story - would you say JC's behaviour over the years has painted the image of an upstanding, likeable citizen and neighbour?
