As far as I can see, most reviews of The Responder have been pretty positive, and rightly so.

oh right, yes it had good reviews on IMDB. The things I saw were more about the BBC I think, and how they keep trotting out gritty cop dramas with only 1 good central character, and how the Americans do it much better. But there is a market for these types of dramas and we quite like them!

I watched the first episode of The Responder last night and I can understand some of the criticism. It does, for me, border on the stereotypical and/or cliche at times, and I found the dialogue a bit clunky at times. I read complaints of dour, grittiness and tbh that drew me to it. I wanted to watch something 'real' (and the synopsis suggested it could be there)... but I don't think we got that. There was almost comedic elements to it that don't quite come off. I didn't find it depressing, gritty or real at all in truth.

Mainly though, again for me, it doesn't seem as though it's quite been rehearsed enough - if that makes sense. Actors are just the saying lines, like the first run-throughs of a stage play. There could be a show there but we're not really seeing it.

Another minor quibble (and I'm not being critical, as I know he probably can't help it) but Martin Freeman is often Martin Freeman. He has these little mannerisms, almost tics or quirks, that make you forget the character and see Freeman. It makes if difficult to submerge yourself in the story when you're constantly being yanked back.

I'm undecided as to whether I'll watch the second episode.

Mrs SD and I are both enjoying it so far.

It is gritty in the sense that it brings the dark underbelly of life in Britain straight into your lounge - it is unsettling and provokes a range of thoughts and conversations; the sign of a good drama?

We can easily binge watch all-episodes iPlayer dumps like this. We can't do more than one of Responder and that has never happened before. It's too much for us to take in.

Freeman is excellent although it must be asked if a serving 'copper' would be on the loose in his mental state.

The rookie cop' is a bit too clichéd for us to be totally believable - although a friend we know (Desk Sergeant Custody Suite) seems to intimate that it is maybe not far from the truth in a number of cases.

Casey (Emily Fairn - new to me) and Carl (Ian Hart) are putting in cracking shifts.

Usual good drama output from the Beeb - apart from the daft dancing scenes in the recent Stay Close and the utterly diabolical piece of trash; The Tourist.

Exactly. we can always find *something* to criticise, but if folks are getting into it, it's doing its job!

I has been watching...

Hawkeye - excellent Marvel series.
The Book of Boba Fett - Can't decide whether it is genius or not. First episode was terrible, then they improved, then the most recent episode was an episode of the Mandalorian. Still find that Matt Berry as a droid is throwing me off a lot. Just can;t take a droid seriously when it sounds like Stephen Toast (see below).
Snowpiercer - Really enjoying this silly tale of humanity surviving an ice age on a train with a psychotic Sean Bean as the train "owner".
Toast of Tinseltown - if you like Toast this is still good, only watched the first episode so far which is classic "Toast".
