What gig did you go to last night?

Well that was, as expected excellent. Oxford O2 academy was a new venue for me, its proper old school, all standing intimate venue (~1000 capacity) that generates a good atmosphere. The Sherlocks, a Sheffield indie band were the support and were excellent, albeit pinching themselves a bit to be playing to packed venues with Shed Seven.

Shed Seven were great, they look like they want to be there and having loads of fun. It was part gig, part interactive sing along party.

Going down to Bournemouth to see them next week. Seen them a couple of times, always good, I'm not sure they could do any other kind of job, will probably still be gigging in another twenty years.

Wasn't bad was it. Also Dana Gavanski (2nd support) was very good.

Just having a beer before bed at a hotel in Nottingham after my final gig of the year - Nilufer Yanya at Rescue Rooms.

Heaven 17/Tony Hadley/Culture Club, in that order last night in Liverpool.

Missed most of Heaven 17 (I know) but from what we heard, they were great.

Tony Hadley was mind blowing, we'd seen him earlier this year and he was doing sort of classical stuff, but last night was Spandau songs. He was absolutely brilliant, not ashamed to say he bought a tear to my eye and hundreds to my wife's, as her sister passed away a few years ago and she loved Spandau Ballet.

Last up (obviously) were Culture Club, the headliner and the reason we went. The reason we'd been looking forward to this night since we first found out about the concert and got tickets.
What a let down: the acoustics were dreadful, every second of bass thumped through your chest, it was like an hour long heart attack. His singing wasn't too clever, the first 3 or 4 songs were obscure ones from their first album (though I do get their bigger fans will have known them) so instead of kicking off with a banger to get the crowd going, it just barely fizzled into life. The volume levels were incredibly annoying (excessively loud) and the whole gig just felt flat. Even 'Do You Really Want To Hurt Me' (and absolutely iconic tune imho) was ruined by slightly dodgy singing and the odd wrong instrument.

It was a huge anti-climax, we really wanted to enjoy it but actually ended up leaving early.

Heaven 17 are great live, especially considering they didn't play live when they first started. Glen Gregory is a very funny man, I've seen them a few times, first was on a double bill with ABC, and the last had a DJ set from Rusty Egan as the warm up. Never been disappointed.

Last night went to see Aynsley Lister at the musician in Leicester. absolutely packed, sell out gig, but..........................Full of bald old men, I almost felt young.....................not only that but as Maz pointed out there were less than 10 women there.................

Stunning gig though it's no wonder he's starting to get 'noticed'.....................Knocking on a bit now though

Starting to get noticed? He played to sold out shows throughout the UK for years now. On the continent he's even more popular.
Knocking on a bit? He's still a young guy

Born in 76 he has as you say been playing for years (been a fan for 20+ years) but no mainstream success

Give them their due, his backing singers were fantastic.

I went to see The Lovely Eggs at the 100 club, supported by an oddball guy called Daudi Matsiko who sang very gentle songs about being bipolar, which was actually better than it sounds.

Then there was Phil Jupitus, aka Porky the Poet. Accompanied by Mark Bedford from Madness and Terry Edwards who has played with everyone. Is Phil Jupitus still on the telly these days? Haven't seen him for a while. He must have upset someone.

Then the Eggs themselves who were great as usual.

Who is everyone at gigs so OLD? (Self included) I expect it when I go to see people I was listening to in the 80s. But the Lovely Eggs aren't that generation.
