"Baby Driver", concerns an autistic, or at least "different" lad who is a getaway driver for a gangster (Kevin Spacey) to pay back some debt. Starts off as a comedic heist story, but gets darker and more violent since we are not exactly dealing with nice people. A bit too long and self indulgent in places but well crafted and a slightly different slant on on a well trodden story.

A solid 7/10 seems fair.

Yeah, I'd say that for the film, closer to 9 for the soundtrack.

It would be pretty mundane without it I think. Feel the same about Guardians of the Galaxy.

In a similar vein, a favourite of mine, Drive has a near perfect soundtrack which was 're-curated' by Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe, totally ruining the feel of the film.

Still don't understand why the director, Nic Refn, allowed that to happen as he's a very meticulous film maker.

So, watched the new Hellraiser (8/10) as my girlfriend said she was in a "gore whore or comedy mood" and it was my choice, so I went with gore.

Apparently not gory enough, which mystified me, and I watch a lot of horror.

Many films on the link that follows I agree with, some I really don't and boy do they love their franchises, so I'm open to suggestions (currently leaning towards Cabin Fever).

The problem lies in her not being able to name the goriest film she's ever seen so I don't really know where to go from here...

I'm glad (if that's the right word) Hostel came second on the links list. Something about the helplessness of the victims predicament touched me more that most other horror films.
Saw films, id forgotten about those, good gory stuff.

Go (1999)

Starring Grange Hill's Desmond Askew this film nicely ties stories together of a christmas rave, an undercouver drugs bust and a las vegas road trip.

Magnum Force.

Arguably the best of the Dirty Harry Films. Good plot, intense performances from Eastwood, David Soul and Hal Holbrook. Then that's that ending - a man should know his limitations!

Although only filmed 2 years later than the original Dirty Harry the world seems to have clicked and moved into modern times and the cars, buildings, scenery all look a lot less dated, which also makes it a fascinating view on the world from half a century ago.

Wonderful and very period theme and incidental music by Lalo Schiffrin, bass by Carol Kaye no less.

If you've not seen it, yoy really should, it's a classic of the genre.

8.5/10.

Thunderbolt & Lightfoot

A film that really could do with a remake. Clint Eastwood is pretty awful, reciting lines rote-like and completely unconvincing throughout. Jeff Bridges played his part well to the tragic conclusion. George Kennedy plays the thug role well. Of its time, Catherine Bach gets a star billing for a brief totty appearance.

4/10

Last night's film was Hidden Figures. Three very intelligent black ladies working for NASA in the early sixties. Despite their intelligence the film portrays the difficulties they had to overcome to obtain their goals. Based on a true story. Well worth a watch.

Agree I love that soundtrack and film, for some reason it was the CD we had in the car when kids were younger and driving across France.Holds happy memories and still listen to it.
Never really took much notice of the Zane Lowe thing...there again I rarely take much notice of remakes or re scores of films that I love.Apparently was sh1te anyway 😁
" It appears that Zane Lowe has been watching the online response to his terrible idea and has decided to give his side of the story. In a series of Tweets documented by the brave folks over at the NME, Lowe said that “no-one is trying to improve” the original soundtrack, and that his version “comes from a place of respect.” He went on to add, somewhat defensively “it is a parallel experience that you can choose to watch or not,” before signing off with “That said, it’s really really good.”

Jaws 2.

The original was a hard act to follow, but you know this actually ain't bad at all.

The script isn't as strong but the effects are better, doubtless as a result of having money thrown at it as a due to the success of the original. Roy Schieder cranks up the paranoia decently, and while the final confrontation isn't as good as the wonderful Robert Shaw as Captain Quint giving it the large, it is still decent.

A solid 7/10. Pretty good, better than most sequels manage,

Tango and Cash.

Its got it all. Violence, wise cracks, a plot worthy of Hitchcock, acting that would make Gielgud and Guinness quake with envy. Its just the complete film.

9.5/10.

Just OMG. No spoilers but very like a Guellirmo del Toro. One you will love or hate but well worth a watch

The telling of a quite incredible true story of the first US operation in Afghanistan following the 9/11 attacks. 12 special ops guys against the Taliban, with the help of feuding local factions. Plenty of Hollywood I'm sure but it raised the subject that I went off and read about - an almost unbelievable mission that they all survived. Sometimes referred to as Soldiers on Horses due to them taking on the armoured Taliban with horses and personal weapons (and air bombardment from B52s).

Not quite Saving Private Ryan, but gruelling nonetheless. Worth staying up for - 7/10.
