The way that Renault split perfectly in half was a miracle. 🤣

Design feature surely of 80s Renaults 🤔

Legend of Seven Golden Vampires (1974)

According to Prime - whilst lecturing in China Van Helsing agrees to help seven kung fu trained siblings reclaim their ancestral mountain village, now the domain of seven powerful vampires and their army of undead slaves.

It's a Hammer/Run Run Shaw production with Dracula meeting kung fu action.

The trouble is that any Dracula that isn't Christopher Lee is on the back foot straight away for me, good to see Peter Cushing as Van Helsing though, and there's the usual Hammer heaving bosoms.

Plenty of martial arts action as the vampires get a good kicking from Peter's new mates in a film that extends way beyond the boundaries of the so bad it's good category. For a long time this has been chargeable on Prime but has now turned up as free, grab it quick while you can.

6/10.

Not quite on topic as I haven't seen it for years but Rififi (50s French heist movie) has THE best Paris car chase. I think I read that they filmed it without special permission just by driving around Paris at high speed in the small hours of the morning.

Tears of the Sun.

Good weapons drills, excellent tac comms, authentic use of fire and cover and mutual fire support. Dunno about the plot, but their technical advisor was on the ball.

7/10.

Rififi is the definitive heist movie, with every heist movie ever since being essentially a remake

for anyone not yet seen it it has the classic three act structure

1: assemble the team
2: the robbery
3: the post heist unravelling

It is also a masterpiece of cinema.

The middle act of the robbery itself is a third of the film, wordless, and without music, and is incredibly tense. Apparently director Jean Dassin (a blacklisted American in the McCarthy era rather than French) wanted the robbery to be silent but composer Georg Auric had written music expecting him to change his mind, " I'm going to write the music for the scene anyways, because you need to be protected" but upon seeing the scene with and without agreed that silence was better.

Have you seen The Predator? Awful.

The Predator has just come on to Disney+ so I had a look, and in fact I'd never seen it (I thought I had). Stupidly explosive, rubbish dialogue, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Certainly not in keeping with the Predator franchise of old, but as a stand alone film it was entertaining.

I watched Zero Fecks Given with my daughter the other night.I think I enjoyed it...about a French "Ryanair" attendant and her excessive lifestyle.
7/10 maybe.

Ransom (1975) with Sean Connery
Scandi hijack-terrorism thriller. Efficient storytelling and lots of plot twists as our Swedish security officer with a Scottish accent has to deal with ruthess terrorists holding the British Ambasssdor to Scandinavia, and perfidious British officials.
Plenty of mid-70's fashion and cars + lots of classy watches.

Personally I thought it was like a pastiche of Predator. I thought Predator 2 was rubbish as well, and Predators was dire. I did enjoy Prey, which I felt got back to the primal roots of the original.

The mash up ones with the Aliens can absolutely do one too.
