13 Hours - The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.

True story covering the murder of ambassador Stevens in Libya and the subsequent defence of a nearby CIA compound and civilian personnel by a handful of ex SF contractors.

Gripping stuff, superb weapons drills, doesn't pull its punches with the grim realities of combat, or with the incompetence of pen pushers.

9/10. One of the best military re-tellings of modern times.

12 Strong.

The telling of a quite incredible true story of the first US operation in Afghanistan following the 9/11 attacks. 12 special ops guys against the Taliban, with the help of feuding local factions. Plenty of Hollywood I'm sure but it raised the subject that I went off and read about - an almost unbelievable mission that they all survived. Sometimes referred to as Soldiers on Horses due to them taking on the armoured Taliban with horses and personal weapons (and air bombardment from B52s).

Not quite Saving Private Ryan, but gruelling nonetheless. Worth staying up for - 7/10.

I really wanted to watch it but fell asleep. Will have to see it again.

Triple Cross (1967)

Based on the true story of Eddie Chapman, a safe breaker who begins working for the Nazis when he's in prison in Jersey during the occupation, I've read a book of his story a few years ago and this seems to tell a similar tale.

With a cast of Christopher Plummer, Gert Frobe, Yul Brunner, and Claudine Auger how could you possibly go wrong?

Obviously looks dated now but I'll give it a 7/10.

Bullet to Beijing (1998)

Michael Caine returns to the Harry Palmer role as he's forcibly retired and ends up going freelance in post communist Russia.

Starts off quite well but quickly loses the gritty feel of the sixties originals, then descends into, 'cashing in on the name,' territory.

Could have been worse I suppose, it was that or the coronation concert.

4/10.

The Mist - 8/10

Arguably one of the cleverest monster movies of recent years. It's less about the beasties and more about the evils that humans will do to each other when put under pressure. I'd call it an intelligent gore whore movie.

Frequency... the impossible tale of time travelling radio waves thanks to an unusually strong aurora. Still enjoyable :okay:

All Quiet on the Western Front.

Seen it before, but worthy of a 2nd go to appreciate the detail. Its a film that demands your full attention - not least of which because of the subtitles - but you're rewarded with an immersive film experience like no other. CGI plays a major role in recreating the buildings and battlefields but you'd never know, it's absolutely seamless, really first class stuff.

And there's plot as well as we follow four patriotic and very naive German recruits through the war.

Very cleverly made and presented, a landmark for the genre.

9/10.

Watched " Hot Fuzz " for the first time. Spent a while trying to identify the various films the were being referenced, plus a wonderful tongue in cheek performance by so many stalwarts from British film and T V.

The first time? 😲

I've lost count of the number of times I've watched it, it'll always be in my top ten film list, yarp! 😂
