Arkansas (Netflix Film 2020)

Filmed in various Chapters, two wannabe drug dealers join an established distribution organisation but things start to unravel.

An enjoyable but not great film - also has Vince Vaughan, John Malkovich and Michael K Williams( Omar Little) as the men heading the drugs empire.
Enjoyable but not great just about sums it up....i enjoyed it, the acting, the characters, the storyline, it was a very watchable film.
I liked the almost mundane way the story unfolded, killings, double dealings, deals...all there but almost like it was day to day stuff, even for the relative novices they were.
7/10, I liked it.

The Lost Boys - 80's vampire flick, nothing to do with Peter Pan.
Not bad. Not great. Watchable and not too long,
No way. It’s much better that that.
It’s an 80s brat pack classic.

On the Town. One of those class MGM musicals from the days when life was easy and brightly coloured, with five or six songs, all but one a clunker, but Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra in their prime, with sparkling support including a woman called Vera Ellen who I'd never heard of, but whose dancing with Kelly is just exquisite.

The Gentlemen.

In a sense it's typical Guy Ritchie fare. Gangsters, swearing, cockerney rhyming slang. However, this effort is elevated somewhat by quite a considered performance my Matthew McConnachyheystgcbdsacjadk, and a brilliant job by Hugh Grant as a double dealing newspaper reporter trying to play both ends off against the middle. Even Colin Farrell makes a good fist of it.

Worth it for the scene where the carncil estate masseev try to rob a gangster, only for him to whip a Sig Sauer MCX out of his jacket and put the wind up them. A very enjoyable...

7.5/10.

In view of Chuck Yeager's recent demise, watched "The Right Stuff".
No idea how accurate tge characterizations are, but everyone except Yeager and Glennis seemed to be peanuts of one level or another...
And three hours!
But 6/10 for effort.

Gifted - excellent, well-crafted tale of an exceptionally gifted child and the battle between her uncle/quasi-father and grandmother over what's in her best interests. Astonishing acting from the young girl, with excellent support from others, and a brilliant script which does a great job of raising interesting questions and exploring grey areas. 8/10.

"Mank" - a play like film about Herman Mankiewicz, particularly his time writing the screenplay for Citizen Kane, whilst convalescing after a road accident. The film intercuts his with incidents from Mank's life before and after.
Gary Oldman is, as usual, outstanding, in the central role. A film about a clever, flawed, but basically decent man, and the world around him at the time. Beautifully shot in black and white.

A narrative about a man and his time and place, rather than plot driven, but I found it compelling

9/10

No explosions, action, nor weapons drills in case anyone is heading for disapointment

Brooklyn, starring Saoirse Ronan. What a great actress she is and Julie Walters is gifted on accents because she does a great Irish.

It's a very good film, IF you like entertainment and want a love story with a bit of a dilemma to choose between.

Half Past Dead.

Even by the standard of some of Segal's later films this is pretty dire, but look at it as a piece of mindless entertainment and it's strangely amusing.

5/10.

Elite Squad - before Wagner Moura became famous for his Brazilian accent of Pablo Escobar, he was a charismatic Captain Nascimiento of infamous Bope unit in Rio.
This fairly right wing police thriller because of him - you feel his rage, his anger or his pain and whatever you think on the subject of War on Drugs you pull for him.
Movie is beautifully shot with overexposed scenes and vertical composition of the scenery (favelas after all) - it certainly feels like a Brazilian city in a heatwave.
Banging soundtrack and (I hope Dear Forum agrees) decent weapon drills.
Good entertainment - 4/5

Just re watched 10 Cloverfield Lane.
Reasonably suspenseful, well acted out, if you didnt know the Cloverfield trilogy storyline, you're left assuming (as the lead female character is) hes a nutjob.
Plays out nicely and into the trilogy storyline once she escapes.
