The Abyss.

Another James Cameron masterpiece. Superb effects for the era, with the underwater shots filmed in a flooded nuclear reactor containment chamber.

Good plot which, like 2001 the screenplay, was written in tandem with the book at the same time - Orson Scott Card did the book, and very good it is too.

Tense, but equally gooey bits where they make contact with the 'aliens', and the classic fight scene where Bud tries to take on the SEAL commander Lt Coffey.

There's little to fault, except perhaps that the full cut is a little long for the regular film goer, although rabid sci fi fans lapped it up.

9/10.

I really like that film - has that "sense of wonder" which only the best sci fi can conjour up. The characters behave believably too, rare in any movie - especially when faced with genuine perill. Having had the odd fright myself in so-say adventure sport, I always appreciate films where frightened characters behave sensibly under pressure. Film slightly devalued by the ending but a great film for all that.

I love The Blues Brothers. I’ve must have seen that film 30+ times. I also have all their albums too. They were only around a few years until John Belushi died, but they were brilliant.

The latest offering from Pixar doing what they do best. The animation is taken to a new level.
The story deals with death and rememberance. My 6 year old was in tears at the end but loved it.

Simply brilliant film and one of the few that I've bought the soundtrack from.

Not to forget the wonderful Carrie Fisher, as well as a cameo from Steven Spielberg amongst many others.

Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves.

It really is an awful piece of drudgery, and time hasn't been kind to it.

4/10.

A Californian Robin Hood was never going to be believable. I thought it was rubbish when it came out. I then caught 5 minutes of it on TV the other day and thought it was still rubbish. Its only saving grace was the ever-brilliant Alan Rickman as the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Sicario - events conspired to stop me seeing this when it was at the cinema, so was pleased to spot it in the listings last night. Somewhat underwhelmed by it though - didn't live up to the promise of the trailer and it seemed overlong. 6/10

Traitor - found on Prime, not heard of it but a worthwhile watch on the battle against terror featuring Don Cheadle and Guy Pearce. 7/10

I'm distantly related to the late Mr Rickman, close enough that it was my Mum's maiden name. Rickman that is, not Alan. Only met him the once though.

Probably my all time favourite two-parter, for probably the third time (tho' the last was some time ago) - Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources. At its heart, as so often, a simply brilliant story. Add wonderful scenery, great acting, flawless direction & cinematography - just wonderful. A perfect way to pass a dreary Sunday afternoon. Give it a few years and I'll watch them again, and love them again just as much.
