The story of explorer Percy Fawcett, and his obsessive search for a lost city deep in the Amazon jungle. The film charts his struggle against an establishment firmly assured that the "savages" could not have built such a city, against the vainglorious fellow explorer who tries to ruin him, and of a world in which he begins to seem horribly out of place. It also features a good supporting turn by Robert Pattinson, seemingly determined to be as unglamourous as possible (every expedition sees him afflicted with some nasty rash on his face). It's not the uncompromising tale of obsession that Aguirre: Wrath of God is, but then, is anything?

My elevator pitch would have been;
Imagine Reservoir Dogs, made by someone who understands how people talk to each other, rather than how characters in films talk to each other.

Two sets of people turn up to a gun deal in an abandoned warehouse, and things go wrong, not because of a double cross, but because of a previous animosity between two peripheral members of the gangs. It's chaotic, and quite nasty at times, but the characterisations are great - Sharlto Copley's Vern in particular is a highlight, as is Armie Hammer's chilled out Ord. The film takes place in one location, and over real time (as far as I can tell) bringing an unexpected interest, complexity and richness to a simple premise. If nothing else, I guarantee you'll never hear "Annie's Song" quite the same way.

My main feature this week, and way better than the (I think) unfair high 60s rating it has on imdb. (No trailer, as apparently it gives away a fair bit of the third act).

The Mighty Boosh's Julian Barrett stars in this tale of a washed up actor called upon to reprise his most famous role. It looks to be going squarely in the direction of Alpha Papa, but takes an unexpected turn part way through that takes it from ho-hum to really pretty good, with several laugh out loud moments. I enjoyed this a lot - it has an affection for the Isle of Man that makes me want to visit the place, and some really good turns from the supporting characters, including nice cameos from Simon Callow and Kenneth Branagh.

Premium Rush

Watched this film a couple of times before. It’s about bike messengers in Manhattan, if you’ve not heard of it. But seeing as you’re on this forum, you will have. Unless you’ve been living in a paper bag (better for the environment and your wellbeing than plastic).

I enjoy this film. No doubt there will be those who don’t. But I do. It’s a feel-good kind of film where the misunderstood good guy does, well, good. Yes, it’s cheesy. But Gordon-Levitt looks like he put time in to learn to ride his fixie well (although no front brake is illegal in this country). The bad guy is great too. Anger impulse issues.

A great adventure in a little under an hour and a half.

No one been to see The Last Jedi yet?
Other than Rian Johnson's directing, I don't think it's that interesting. It's really difficult to decouple the films from the status the mythology has in popular culture, so reviews are hard to trust as well. I'll catch it on streaming.

It wasn't so long ago we had thriving threads when the various trailers came out... now the film's out and...

...which begs the question Where have all the Star Wars fans gone?

In the film Facebook / G+ groups I follow, there's a fair bit of excitement about it - along with a fair amount of spoiler paranoia, the latter may explain why people aren't posting about it.

Quicksilver (1986)

Empowered by my recent viewing of Premium Rush (2012), I searched for other films featuring cycling and discovered Quicksilver with Kevin Bacon. Filmed hot on the heels of Bacon’s Footloose, Quicksilver is the story of a genius stock trader who becomes a bike messenger (purely from film-land, I don’t think there are any other types of cyclist in Manhattan). Entertaining if you like cheesy 80s flicks, and featuring a young Laurence Fishburne of The Matrix fame, Quicksilver is a story of redemption both for the hero and supporting characters.

The bikes are classic if a little confused.

Bacon’s bike flits between being a freewheeling single-speed and a fixie, sometimes with straight stunt forks and sometimes with slightly curved forks. The opening rider shifts up and his chain shifts down. A rider shifts gears to go faster on the flat and drops on to the largest sprocket.

Fun, but no thinking required.

A true story about a 5 year old who gets lost in India, then adopted by Australian parents, he then uses google earth to find his birth mother.
Amazing tale of survival and hope. Well worth watching.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Episode VIII (2017)......Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher....went with the family to the cinema to watch this, now I am not a big star wars fan, but this was a fairly good film, I enjoyed it, some good action, some funny moments, not too bad 7/10
I am a big Star Wars fan (but detest those bloody prequels)... just returned from the cinema and The Last Jedi was mostly enjoyable. Didn't think much of the Casino scenes... and was glad that C3-PO didn't get much of a look in... and those Porgs didn't annoy me as much as I'd expected. 7/10 seems fair enough.
