The Room (2003)

In anticipation of watching "The Disaster Artist" at the cinema I took on the solemn task of watching Tommy Wiseau's 2003 self funded romantic drama production "The Room", which he also wrote (based on his unpublished novel and play of the same name), directed and starred in. Considered to be the worst film ever made I wanted to see if it lived up to the hype. It, fellow film lovers, is indeed incredibly bad. It is worse than that, it is like a film made by some kind of AI with the processing power of a 1970s Casio digital watch. Yet I was mesmerised. I could not take my eyes off it. Awful yes, but just as outsider art breaks and ignores the rules of composition and perspective so indeed The Room ignores all the rules of story, plot, continuity, character, drama, coherent direction... all the elements which are basic requirements for any film. Yes there are some production values which stop it from being completely unwatchable. (mainly provided by the professional set building, camera operation, lighting crew hired by Wiseau) but viewed as a piece of "outsider art" it unintentionally shines and entertains. You will have never seen anyone quite like Tommy Wiseau before. 10/10

Rambo - part II.

As clichéd and wooden as the first film was original and mesmerising. A poor effort, that strangely did incredibly well at the box office.

4/10.

Oliver! - Ron Moody is sublime. My 6 year old is prancing around the house singing 'Gotta pick a pocket or two...'
My mum took us to that when we were very little. She later told us about deciding to take the kids, despite knowing the story because "it's a musical, they will change the ending". She recalled her horror as Oliver Reed <deleted> and worried she had scarred us. No, we loved it. Presumably left the cinema singing "Gotta pick a pocket or two"

Interesting that nearly 50 years later, a parent is not at all concerned about exposing their kids to Bill Sikes' fate. I'm trying to decide if that is a good thing or not. Probably a good thing as you correctly judged your little'uns response correctly, but my mum didn't. I assume we didn't react badly because we knew it was fiction, but it's too long ago to be sure.

(weird fact: I had an unhealthy crush on Oliver Reed when I was way too young)

I also saw Atomic Blonde

The plot is somewhat pedestrian, but it's totally saved from that by outstanding performances from Charlize Theron (who I now am in love with) and James McAvoy

Excellent fight scenes, and it captures the sense of the late 80s Berlin events perfectly.
Good weapons drills.

re Charlize Theron
Try see her film Monster (if you haven't already), it's a great movie and she is superb in it.

Closed Circuit. I recorded this some time ago and I only just got round to watching it. A British conspiracy film in which 2 lawyers fight the secret service to try to get justice/the truth. I really enjoyed it.
