The Room (2003)
In anticipation of watching "The Disaster Artist" at the cinema I took on the solemn task of watching Tommy Wiseau's 2003 self funded romantic drama production "The Room", which he also wrote (based on his unpublished novel and play of the same name), directed and starred in. Considered to be the worst film ever made I wanted to see if it lived up to the hype. It, fellow film lovers, is indeed incredibly bad. It is worse than that, it is like a film made by some kind of AI with the processing power of a 1970s Casio digital watch. Yet I was mesmerised. I could not take my eyes off it. Awful yes, but just as outsider art breaks and ignores the rules of composition and perspective so indeed The Room ignores all the rules of story, plot, continuity, character, drama, coherent direction... all the elements which are basic requirements for any film. Yes there are some production values which stop it from being completely unwatchable. (mainly provided by the professional set building, camera operation, lighting crew hired by Wiseau) but viewed as a piece of "outsider art" it unintentionally shines and entertains. You will have never seen anyone quite like Tommy Wiseau before. 10/10
