'Weepies' seemed to be a big thing a few decades ago. My mother was often being recommended films by an aunt, with puke inducing titles along the lines of Petals on the Wind, Something Fragile Falls, Snowdrops in the Spring, The Wilting Rose and An Early Autumn. They all had the same ending; death, loss, tears, sadness, slow piano music, soft focus and Mum going through half a packet of tissues and thoroughly enjoying every tear. I thought they were sh!t.

Mum's List is pretty far from that though, crap score and soundtrack aside.

O Matador - 7/10

A Brazilian take on the Western. Revenge, betrayal, greed, hard living all wrapped up in a generational story with a neat if somewhat obvious twist. Some of the special effects were distractingly terrible which was a shame.

Wheelman - 1/10

I only watched this to satisfy a bet with myself: that it would be a Drive rip off. I was half right as it's been crossed with Locke.

Laughable, and not in a good way.

Good Kill 8-10

Interesting film about the "pilots" flying drones over Afghanistan.

Can't really say much more without spoiling it!.

Went to see Paddington 2 with the kids.
It is absolutely perfect family entertainment, with a who's who cameo cast of British acting talent.
Hugh Grant steals the show and is fantastic as the old washed up lovie.

The Siege of Jadotville (2016) ......Mark Strong, Jamie Dornan.....film about an Irish U.N. peacekeeping mission in the Congo in 1961, I really enjoyed this film good acting, good action, good story, made all the better being about Irish soldiers, who this year will recieve more of the recognition they deserve........ 8/10
.
the real story and aftermath is a very interesting story well worth the read.
.
I never knew much about this part of Irish history until around 1992-3 when visiting an ex Irish soldier who told me one of the reasons he joined the Irish army was because of the Siege of Jadotville.
I've just watched this, excellent film.

It's quite amazing how they got out of that, only to end up being shoot on from above.

8/10.

Toni Erdmann (Prime)

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0uwi5EPnpA

A music teacher struggles to reconnect with his daughter Ines, who is a high powered consultant in the oil industry. Finding himself without students, and without responsibilities at home, he travels to Romania, where she works, to attempt to be closer to her. That doesn't go well, and he hits upon the idea of turning up in a suave, suited alter ego, "Toni Erdmann".

In the Hollywood version of this film, the daughter would be slowly charmed by Erdmann's inappropriate humour (as would her superiors) and everything would turn out ok. As you'd imagine in life though, things here are messier, and the father's sense of humour has mixed effects, with his daughter either buying into his devil may care attitude by the end, or having a sort of breakdown, depending on how you view the events. It's a surprising film, managing to be challenging, funny, and quite heartwarming at turns. I think it is, in large part, about the masks people wear, the Toni Erdmann character being most obvious, but Ines' work "face" being at least one other. It will also make you see Petits Fours in a completely new, and not entirely welcome, way.

Finally got round to watching the first one t'other night - terrific, full of cracking one-liners ("It's not much to go on..."), entertaining incidents (bath surfing anyone?) and charming, affectionate performances, all underpinned by a plot of suitably deranged bonkersness. Perfect family fun.

I do like some of the classic weepies, like "who will take my children?" I wouldn't inflict them on anyone else though, definitely ones to watch alone.

Watched a couple over the weekend:

Despicable M3 - still funny, but on this showing the franchise is starting to run out of steam and the Minions didn't feature enough for my liking. Also snappily short at about an hour and a half, which was good. 7/10

X Men: Apocalypse
- very nearly didn't bother after the turgid, overblown and overlong recent additions to the franchise (X Men: Days of Future Past and The Wolverine, I'm looking at you), but glad we did as this was a return to form for Marvel's "other" cash cow.
Great action sequences, a plot that you can follow and CGI that actually works. 8/10

Under The Skin (2013) ...absolute garbage and yet another film starring Scarlet Johansson that I've failed to reach the end of. I suppose it was trying to be arty, with barely any dialogue and hardly any plot. A big fat 0/10 from me.
