I wanted to watch JFK (haven't seen it since it was on at the flicks) on Amazon but it's not out for another 4 years.

I loved this film, until I found out it was a complete work of fiction.

Because I've recently read the book I decided to watch War of the Worlds (the Spielberg version). And despite my hatred of it when I first saw it, it's actually pretty good.

Until the end, which is the cheesiest thing I've seen in a while. Almost like it was done as an antidote to the genuine darkness and fear that had gone before. Very disappointing.

7/10 without that bit. A generous 3 otherwise.

I haven't seen the Spielberg, but I've read the book and of course seen the George Pal version (once - in the 90s I hasten to emphasise - at a cinema. It really stands up.) According to the plot summary on Wikipedia, the recent film has the same ending as the earlier film and the book (and the Orson Welles production, as I recall).

Both movies I only really remember the scene where they're hiding the in the house while the alien probes for them. Okay flicks, but the radio play wins imho.

American Sniper - 7/10

It's a bit "America f*ck yeah!" at times, but given the subject matter that's fair enough. The psychological journey is thoughtfully handled as is the futility of war, when it becomes apparent. The final battle scene is one of the best I've seen.

Having been a very big fan of the war of the worlds music story, Richard Burton version from the 80's the new film was just a mile off.
But I find cgi annoying at times.

Richard Burton had a captivating voice as does Morgan Freeman but listening to WotW is always the best way to enjoy this great story

Maybe watch it before you criticise my judgement?
Spielberg at his schmaltzy worst.

So that't not going to happen. One of only two movies* ** *** I've walked out of in the cinema was a schmalzy Spielberg.

*Always
**The other was Audition, for the opposite reason.
***Well, maybe 3 movies, as I found Robert De Niro's Frankenstein monster so tedious, I took a break to walk around the lobby and read movie posters, but eventually went back in.

I've not watched Frankenstein in years, but I do remember thinking Branagh had turned it into a stupidly overblown pastiche of the book.

Can't think of much about the monster beyond him moping around on ice plains for ages.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

I never get tired of this movie and I've watched it more times then I can remember.
Happy, sad, funny, horrific, contemplative, engrossing. It truly is a stunning movie.

It' a candidate for top 10 best films.

The Andromeda Strain,
A poor reproduction of the original taut, sci-fi eco-terror suspense movie featuring the fabulous Shelly Winters as the scientist who swims through tunnels to rescue the day.
