Dunkirk - 6/10

A thing of beauty but lacking any substance, despite the earnest desire to make the viewer care.

The Three Musketeers - the one we all remember with Michael York & Oliver Reed (and Roy Kinnear and Spike Milligan). A terrific romp, with fine performances all round and a script of sheer genius, packed with genuinely brilliant, beautifully underplayed, one-liners. Just a joy from start to finish. 9/10.

Well, might be ahead of the curve here, but at the weekend, I'm going to watch the new blu-ray release of 'Journey to the Center of the Earth' the old 1959 classic with James Mason. I loved it as a kid (although poor Gertrude the duck bites the dust), got the DVD but skipped the blu ray as they initially released a 'collectors limited edition' which really means they do a limited run and charge the world for it (it was changing hands online for $75-$100). However, another firm got the rights and have just released a 4K HD restored version for a much more respectable £15.
OT but I also loved the LP by Rick Wakeman.

Yeah, that's another fave of mine. There is a box set of different versions from the 70's concerts available. Didn't like the reworked version as it's too long & got boring. I had a look at the blu ray at the weekend. In 'cinema mode' on my TV, it look stunning as if it was shot last week. There's a commentary track with two film historians and Diane Baker, who played Jenny in the film (must be in her 80's by now). Interesting insights into the old studio system they had back in the day.

FWIW I've given up buying new and have started waiting a while then buying blurays from the likes of Musicmagpie and 365games. I got the three Hobbit movies for less than a fiver.
I've not thought about older movies getting a new lease of life so I'm going to start looking.

Denzel washing up and tidying up his way through The Equalizer. Ridiculous nonsense as usual with this sort of thing but thoroughly enjoyable. Bit gorey in places, a small price to pay and as they say you can't make an omelette without drilling a few Russians in the back of the head.

The Day After Tomorrow.

A bit of a guilty pleasure. I love this film, so 10/10.

Objectively though, the science is nonsense and the plot thinner than Kim Jong Un's grip on power. On the plus side the effects are great, there's a refreshing lacknof swearing, and Dennis Quaid drives one of the original Honda Insights. 7/10.

22 Bullets.

Loved it, Jean Reno, you'll remember him if nothing else from Leon. Very similar storyline, mobsters in France, hitmen, murder and betrayal. Brillliant.
