Legend. I generally go out of my way to avoid British gangster movies, but always rate Tom Hardy and was intrigued by the prospect of him playing both Krays. I wasn't disappointed. His Reggie, I felt, was a tad light on menace, for a man who must have been a really nasty piece of work, but his Ron - 'I prefer boys' - was superb. The rest of the movie provided a perfectly adequate support for the central performance(s) - overall I think IMDB's 7/10 is probably about right.

Wow, that's so different to how I remember it.

Well, might be ahead of the curve here, but at the weekend, I'm going to watch the new blu-ray release of 'Journey to the Center of the Earth' the old 1959 classic with James Mason. I loved it as a kid (although poor Gertrude the duck bites the dust), got the DVD but skipped the blu ray as they initially released a 'collectors limited edition' which really means they do a limited run and charge the world for it (it was changing hands online for $75-$100). However, another firm got the rights and have just released a 4K HD restored version for a much more respectable £15.

We went to the cinema and watched American Assassin, as I'd completed a 18 mile cycle prior to going I had a hot dog and a Diet Coke as a treat, that's where the enjoyment ended.

My movie poster comment...

Don't bother.

Small Faces. No, nothing to do with the band, it's a sort of semi-autobiographical account of growing up in gangland Glasgow in the late '60s. Staggeringly grim in its portrayal of a 'hard man' culture in a bleak, impoverished landscape, yet shot thru' with humanity and humour. Despite which, I thank God it's a world far far removed from mine.

Sounds good, I'll put that on my watch list, cheers.

I Spit on Your Grave 2 - 3/10

I quite enjoyed the remake of this when I saw it, mostly because it's absolutely brutal and genuinely shocking. This sequel seems to think that extreme violence will mask the nonsensical story, which becomes so ridiculous I was actually giggling by the end. Apparently there are two more, which I'm tempted to watch just for a laugh.

Kingsman - The Golden Circle

Really liked the first one, and this has much to enjoy even if it's not quite as good.
Now, despite that there are a few quibbles.
First is the surprisingly clunky CGI at times. At times it really jarred and I can't understand why as lots of the film is highly stylised and the CGI works fine. Maybe some bits were done on a Friday afternoon?
Second is the number of big names that are in the film but are oddly underused. Oscar Winner Halle Berry plays what is essentially the sidekick to a sidekick and Channing Tatum features way less than you might imagine.
Third (and final) is Elton John. His initial appearance is funny and maybe even inspired. But then it all gets silly later on and having him hamming it up all over the screen adds nothing.

So, check your brain in at the door and enjoy the riot in front of your eyes.

Airplane II.

Not as good as the first, because it lacks the genius of Nielsen and Bridges. Shatner has a small part which he hams up beautifully, but other than that the horse might not be quite dead yet, but is nevertheless being heartily flogged.
