Spectre, Netflix

Pleasantly surprised to see a Bond on Netflix, settled down with the kids to watch it hoping it didn't open like Casino Royale ;)

Very good. Develops the story from the last few movies, reintroduces some much needed laughter, a touch of the ludicrous, and reprises some of the old school bad guy fights from the first movies.

8/10

Anthropoid (2016) ........Cillian Murphy, Jamie Dornan, Charlotte Le Bon, Anna Geislerová, Harry Lloyd, Toby Jones. WW2 film about the assassination of SS General Reinhard Heydrich, excellent film, I thought the ending was very well done, well worth the watch. 8/10

You wouldn't have thought there was a market for 2 films about the assassination of Heydrich so close together, but earlier this year there was HHhH as well. I haven't seen either yet.

Une Vie de Chat - 9/10 (for the animation) 5/10 (for the story)

Only an hour long, so not really a film, but it's more for children than adults really (there are no "jokes for the parents" in this one). Very, very simple and not much story wise, but that's more than made up for by the sublime animation and excellent soundtrack.

Escape from New York (1981). Not seen it for years but couldn't resist the special edition DVD in a charity shop for a pound; mostly purchased for the feature length 'making of'. I would have thought this film would feel more dated than it is. Maybe it's James Cameron's John Carpenter's sparse synth soundtrack or the monochrome CGI that keeps this film firmly planted in a dark yet not too distant future... and unlike too many modern movies, it's a palatable 95 minutes rather than the best part of three hours long. 7/10.

Another classic soundtrack by John Carpenter (and Alan Howarth).

  1. Wow, I guess their names are similar, but their works are so vastly different ....
  2. No, Karen's brother was the other member of the band.
Coincidently, I watched a bit of EFNY today on YouTube, in brief tribute to the late** great Harry Dean Stanton.

Yeah... one makes films and the other's a er... film maker. It's not easy being blonde*
