Arrival... a linguist tries to learn an alien language. Meanwhile, politicians are dicks. An enjoyable low key not much happens type of sci-fi.
Ghost in the Shell. I loved the bladerunner aesthetic, but after an hour or so, I realised that I couldn't give care less about the characters or plot, so watched Lego Batman instead. I watched half of this but turned it off because the view from the window was too good to miss. I tried to watch the second half on the flight back, but the sound kept fecking up, so i've no idea if Gotham City survived the onslaught of evil. I'll watch it again when i find it in a charity shop for 50p in 6 month's time.

Just watched 'When Worlds Collide' on the Horror Channel
Classic 50's sci-fi:okay:

Passengers: It should have been a lovely RomCom. Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence are very personable, and the trailers gave a classic SF meet cute - two random passengers on a 120 year trans-stellar migration come out of hibernation early and are trapped alone on a giant intergalactic cruise ship.
Effectively he kidnaps her, pulls her out of her life so he won't be lonely, imprisoning her to a lifetime just with him. Shades of Fritzl, without the incest. But of course she eventually forgives him and stays with him, because nothing says romance like Stockholm syndrome.

2/10.

Exodus - The something or otherthing.

Starring Christian Bale. Visually and musically an obvious attempt to make a film with the style and atmos of Gladiator, but without the plot of special effects budget.

Bale does little other that gaze cryptically off into the distance, and stab lots of people. Fortunately, he says little. Sadly, any wobblies he threw during production have been edited out, which is a shame as they would have otherwise livened up a very dull film.

2.5 hours of Bale staring meaningfully at stuff, and walking across a desert while some bald actor tries manfully to suck in his beer gut for the duration of the film as he gives chase is way too much. I can not recommend this film to anyone ill with anything more than a sniffle, as you'll be wanting to book in to Dignitas to escape.

2/10.

Me Before You - 2/10

Awful. Cheaply filmed (the tropical storm bit is particularly rubbish), badly acted and just generally irritating.

I added a point for the incredible eyebrows of Emilia Clarke, which seem to have a life of their own.

Gladiator.

What can I say that hasn't already been said? Classic revenge plot, career performances from Harris, Read, Crowe and Phoenix. Breathtaking recreations of ancient battlefields. Political intrigue. Award wining score. Its all there.

The only slight aphid in the face cream is that the early CGI doesn't translate well to the small screen, and certain green-screen shots are patently obvious and bring the belief you've suspended crashing back with a thud.

Nevertheless, a modern classic. 8.5/10.

I watched The Limehouse Golem at the cinema. It's quite gory really. Just your everyday tale of sexual deviants and serial killers.

Flight (Netflix)
Denzel Washington stars again in this quite different (to The Magnificent Seven) film. There's more depth to this, a sort of "anti-Sully" film, in which a pilot with a serious substance abuse problem saves (most of) the lives on a flight. His issues have nothing to do with the accident, and may contribute to the unusual solution he chooses to save the aircraft, so what should happen to him? The film splits it's time between him dealing with his issues, and with the enquiry into the crash, touching on co-dependency issues too. Really good.

We watched this last night and really enjoyed it. Denzel was excellent, in fact the whole cast was strong, Goodman was a bit overbearing in his brief time on screen however that was the very much the nature of the guy he was playing. You know there's no easy way out for Denz but you still root for the guy to get it together whilst knowing that he's a pretty hopeless case. Great stuff.

Any other Denz recommendations welcome.

Have you seen Operation Daybreak with Martin Shaw, if so how does it compare?

I can't compare as its many a year since I saw Operation Daybreak, the only time I remembered Operation Daybreak was the ends are similarish, if I'm honest it wasn't until the end that I remembered the older film but Anthropoid is worth a watch if its been a while since you've watched Operation Daybreak.
Thanks, it's probably five years at least since I've seen it and I remember it as a good film, but I was looking forward to the new one so I hope that's as good as I've heard.
