Just watched 'Whisky Galore' while drinking Aldi Glen Madeupname single malt Islay Scotch.
Tastes like Caol Ila to me - it's not quite got the edge of Laphroaig. A damn fine tipple at £17.49

Not sure if serious...

Yes serious. I don't really see much acting in Denzels work until more recently. Man on Fire is a surprisingly good movie given I was expecting a straightforward bodyguard/action movie and it's down to denzels acting.

As a bodyguard in a generic action movie?

I don't particularly rate him either (though Fences is very good despite being over long), but Man on Fire being better than my recommendations? Steady on!

District 9 on Netflix.

I loved it, my wife thought it was dross.
An inept, excitable, innocent lead character oversees the eviction of aliens and become embroiled in a web of Nigerian criminals and corporate leaders who will stop at nothing in the pursuit of the aliens weaponry which is unusable in human hands....as yet.
Comical without being a comedy, lots of shoot out scenes and for me...very very enjoyable.

Swiss Army Man (Netflix)
A film with, perhaps, the oddest premise of any I've watched this year. A castaway finds a corpse washed up on a beach, and uses the body (who he names Manny) as a boat, compass, harpoon gun... In the course of this, Manny appears to regain some vestiges of life, and as he has forgotten much of what he knew, Hank (the castaway) begins to teach him, and the two establish an oddly touching friendship.

It's a weird mixture of gross out humour, self discovery, and examination of what happens to fantasy when it meets the real world. That latter aspect put me in mind slightly of "Tomboy" (see reviews passim). It's a curious mixture of a film, but mostly well judged enough that it remains touching despite its gross out moments, and funnny despite its sentimentality. Worth checking out.

The Siege of Jadotville (Netflix)
Solid action film that loses its way slightly in trying to cram in a politicians vs ordinary soldiers subplot. The action is gripping, and well handled, but the politics feels a little rushed and simplistic. Jamie Dorman's accent seems to wander Ireland a little too. There's a slightly uncomfortable "white man's burden" feel to it as well (despite being set in Africa, the only non-white character with a large role is the awful dictator - otherwise, we see masses of faceless mercenaries, who are, for the most part, mown down without a second thought for them).

The Handmaiden (Prime)
I have no idea how I will do justice to this film in the short space I usually do these reviews in. On its surface, this is an intricate tale of con-artists plotting to trick a young Japanese woman out of her inheritance. It's also a film about sex and intimacy, contrasting the high minded (supposedly) consumption of vintage erotica by a club of upper class men with a more spontaneous, but societally unacceptable erotic relationship. It's also about a sort of deep, primal love, and the lengths to which that will drive people. All these threads are handled superbly, and put together in a beautifully photographed, wonderfully acted whole that is undoubtedly my main feature this week.

Well I don't think it is generic, I think that movie is a hidden gem.

Fallen is probably a better movie, but Denzel in that is okay and everything else you've listed just seems to be part of the furniture, not driving it.

Flight is another one where there some real character brought into it by him, but his early career was just a bit, well, wooden in my humble opinion. More so than supposedly wooden Keanu Reeves.

Well, fair enough and I think we sort of agree. I thought he was better back in the day (had forgotten about Malcolm X), then after Training Day just did different versions of the same character until Fences.

Kingsman - The Secret Service.

A cliche's, CGI overload. Nevertheless, entertaining action and a surprising amount of swearing.

6/10. OK. It's not a waste of two hours, but not worth sitting up for especially.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
2012. Ok sci fi crap, but there wasn't anything else i wanted to watch, so it wasted a couple of hours and drowned out the sound of the winds and rain. 5/10.
