It's funny, I know the pointy-head consensus says the remake is 'better' than the original, and I can kind of see what they're driving at, but even though I've seen it (and enjoyed and appreciated it) twice, when I think True Grit it's absolutely the John Wayne version that comes to mind. "Fill your hands you sunnuvabitch!" I like both, but if I had to choose just one...

I'd be hard pressed to choose just one. I think the ending of the remake is better, but I'm not sure why they added to the book (the hanging man, for example) instead of going for the sort of faithful adaptation they made of "No Country..." I have a great deal of affection for the original, but John Wayne plays himself, rather than Cogburn, I think; probably a limitation of the expectations of the time, and his stardom.

Cosmopolis (PVR'ed)

An odd one this - a distinctly unlikeable billionaire asset manager travels Manhattan in a luxuriously appointed stretch limousine, seemingly immune to the things happening around it, until those people and events begin to unravel his life. It's an oddly cold film, and while there's something in there, I really struggled to figure out what it was. Based on a Don DeLillo novel, apparently, which I'll try and look out at some point, having quite enjoyed "Pafko at the Wall".

The Hooligan Factory

Takes the piss out of all the mean and moody modern football violence films in a dark comedy kind of way.

6/10.

I've not watched this, but just seen that about to start on the Horror Channel is a contender for the film title most likely to make you say WTF?!

Nude Nuns With Big Guns.

Meek's Cut-off (PVR'ed)

Hypnotic Western - I saw this years ago, and pvr'ed it last time it was on. A real sense of the isolation and pressure of space of the open spaces of the old west, which slowly drive the members of a small wagon train to paranoia and despair. Not everyone's cup of tea (you'll not find shootouts and horse chases here) but very good.

Robot and Frank (PVR'ed)
Lovely tale about a retired jewellery thief and the robot helper that his son buys him. Whilst the synopsis reads like the sort of gentle character piece I'd usually snooze through, events take an unexpected turn, and the performances are terrific. I think that this is currently available on Netflix.

The Equalizer...Denzel Washington.

No earth shattering story line, the usual fayre of ex special forces or CIA operative (i never did figure what his past was exactly)...finally finds himself an anonymous mundane life after a self imposed 'disappearing'. But trouble finds him...Russian gangs, money laundering, bent cops, prostitution etc etc all conspire to bring him back to his emotionless ability to assess targets, kill and disappear ...at complete odds to his new life of kindess and gentleness.

Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Goal of the Dead - 6/10

A game of football goes badly wrong when one of the players injects himself with infected steroids. The infection spreads throughout the stadium leaving a small group to fight its way out.

Even writing that feels stupid, but it's actually pretty good, does help to know French as some of the jokes really don't translate properly into English. Would give it a 7 but running to two hours it is waaaaaay too long.

I watched..... Ironman: Civil War

I rate it 9/10 as there was a little too much comedy in it. Though it did set up the groundwork for a certain other series/character to make a comeback.

Meh. 5 or 6/10. Not a patch on the original but it tries to be different.
